On November 8, voters in Massachusetts (along with California and Nevada) decided that marijuana should be legal to use recreationally.
While it’s still early to tell what impact this will have on Massachusetts’s economy, there’s a good chance the state’s budding weed tech community will continue to grow and evolve. Here, we’ve rounded up three weed tech companies with local roots.
Stoneham-based CannaKorp, Inc. is a startup geared toward improving the experience for medical marijuana patients. CannaKorp has created a single-use pod and vaporizer system (kind of like a Keurig) that’s easy to use and efficient. The total system includes a vaporizer device called CannaCloud, single-use pods containing lab tested cannabis (CannaCups) and an automated processing and filling machine, the CannaMatic.
Orange Photonics builds products and services that are bringing quality control to the cannabis industry. LightLab, their first product, helps users with accurate and cost-effective marijuana potency testing. Orange Photonics was founded by a Tufts alumni and made the Final 26 for MassChallenge in 2015.
Potbox
Potbox helps you avoid the long dispensary lines and endless choices of choosing medical marijuana. Though Potbox is headquartered in San Francisco, the company’s co-founders have ties back to Boston with alumni links to Berklee and Bentley. Potbox is a premium cannabis subscription club that curates high-quality medical marijuana that’s delivered from the farm to your doorstep every month. Since Potbox operates from California, it can only bring its services to state residents in San Francisco and Los Angeles with a prescription for medical marijuana, but the startup does offer gift cards.
