Hungry? These 3 Boston foodtech startups are serving up new ways to eat

Over the last few years, a number of companies have popped up in Greater Boston that are dedicated to changing the way we eat. From indoor growing pods to restaurants manned by robots (yes, you read that correctly), the following three startups are transforming how Bostonians get their food.

If you’ve always wanted to grow your own produce but live in the city, look no further than Grove. The Somerville-based startup makes connected growing systems called “pods” for indoor growers. Whether you’re planting radishes, celery or chives, Grove’s pods come with curated soil and nutrient blends to fit your eating habits. If you don't have a green thumb, don’t worry: These pods sync directly with Grove’s “growing assistant” app, which provides care guides, recipes, 24/7 support and harvest planning.

Want your dinner cooked for you by — a team of robots? Sounds like a sci-fi movie, but that’s the concept behind Spyce, a stealthy restaurant startup that launches this month. Created by four MIT grads, Spyce aims to offer a brand new dining concept with its “never-before-seen” robotic kitchen. Headed by James Beard-award-winning chef Daniel Boulud, Spyce opens May 3r at 241 Washington St. in Boston.

Designed for the average person who wants to grow their own produce sustainably, SproutsIO is a Cambridge-based startup trying to get its smart gardening tech to the masses. The SproutsIO “smart microgarden” is a soil-free, indoor gardening system that can be controlled from your mobile device. Because you manage the microgarden indoors, you can enjoy fresh fruits and veggies any time of the year — while probably paying less than you would at the grocery store.
