Boston is home to some of the world’s most prestigious universities and organizations. Unsurprisingly, it’s also a leading hub in the tech industry.

StartupBlink recently ranked the Boston area’s startup ecosystem as fourth in the United States. Even amid mass layoffs, the number of tech professionals who work in and around Boston grew in 2022, according to CompTIA’s annual report. Additionally, it landed sixth in the top metro areas for job postings in April 2023.

In a city that is a magnet for bright minds and home to many innovative companies, Jobcase is distinguished by its impactful mission to improve access to career opportunities. This mission, which feels especially relevant as many contend with job losses and uncertain futures, unifies and drives team members to make a difference in their workplace, communities and beyond.

Crunchtime is another local company with an impactful mission: To transform the hospitality industry through its operations management software. In the post-pandemic rebound of the food service industry, this mission also feels especially crucial.

Read on to learn more about these two Boston-area organizations that have cultivated mission-driven teams through their unique cultures.

What Jobcase does: HR tech company Jobcase, an affiliate of MIT’s Computer Science and AI Lab, is a social media platform dedicated to empowering and advocating for the world’s workers. Jobcase collaborates with employers, nonprofits and the government to improve and diversify workforce participation.

Mission-driven culture: In November, Chief of Staff Hilary Dionne spoke to Built In Boston about how Jobcase’s team is driven to make an impact. “It’s all about getting people together so they can get ahead for themselves and for their families,” said Dionne. “Our mission is ambitious and increasingly important as economic inequality widens and many Americans struggle with the rising cost of living.”

A focus on DEI: DEI initiatives fall flat without staying in tune with how employees feel and transforming feedback into action. “Feedback from our engagement surveys consistently indicates that a strong majority of Jobcasers believe that the company values diversity, feel respected at Jobcase and believe they can bring their whole self to work,” said Director of People and Culture Farrell Ross in a 2022 interview with Built In Boston.

A people-first culture: “Employee engagement and inspiration play vital roles in attracting and retaining great talent,” Head of HR Kristin Koehler explained in a 2022 interview with Built In while discussing Crunchtime’s noteworthy employee benefits. Koehler noted the “robust health, dental and vision plans, fitness and wellness reimbursements, generous PTO policies, annual bonus eligibility and a 401(k) plan with a company match” that employees receive.

A significant rebrand: Crunchtime — formerly styled as CrunchTime! — was founded in 1995, and a lot has changed since then. In April, the company announced a rebranded logo, wordmark and visual identity. The shift signals its commitment to continual evolution and adaptability while delivering the service that clients have known for nearly three decades.
