Job DescriptionJob Summary:
Plan and conduct comprehensive applications/web development for complex projects; typically work as part of a team to implement complex business solutions. Perform expert coding: design, develop code at an expert level, and manage development projects, teams, programs. May manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Job-Specific Responsibilities:
We are looking for a highly qualified person with skills in bioinformatics software development and extensive experience and interest in scientific database production. A demonstrated interest in managing and integrating complex biological data is essential. The candidate will participate in a genome database project at Harvard University, Cambridge. The successful candidate will collaborate in developing and maintaining database applications and data for public research use, and in developing analytical tools for the investigation of molecular biology datasets. FlyBase is one of the premier ""model organism"" databases, focusing on genomic and genetic data on the fruit fly, Drosophila (http://flybase.org/). The project involves an international collaboration with ~35 people distributed at several sites.

Qualifications
Basic Qualifications:
- Minimum of five years’ post-secondary education or relevant work experience
Additional Qualifications and Skills:
- Knowledge of information technology applications, processes, software and equipment
- Highly specialized knowledge of a specific technology
- Demonstrated team performance skills, service mindset approach, and the ability to act as a trusted advisor
- A minimum of a masters degree, in the field of molecular biology, bioinformatics or a related discipline.
- 3+ years experience working with RDMS/SQL in a production setting.
- PhD preferred.
- Demonstrated, strong background in collecting and processing scientific data, preferably in the context of Drosophila research. Experience with Perl or python in a UNIX environment is essential, and a working knowledge of java would be useful.
- The ideal candidate will have strong collaborative skills and an familiarity in the model organism database community, and an interest in software development using open-source software resources in the production of reusable software components suitable for open distribution.
Certificates and Licenses:
- Completion of Harvard IT Academy specified foundational courses (or external equivalent) preferred
- This position is a 1 year term appointment from the date of hire with renewal contingent upon funding and performance.

Work Format Details
This position has been determined by school or unit leaders that some of the duties and responsibilities can be effectively performed at a non-Harvard location. The work schedule and location will be set by the department at its discretion and based upon operational needs. When not working at a Harvard or Harvard-designated location, employees in hybrid positions must work in a Harvard registered state in compliance with the University’s Policy on Employment Outside of Massachusetts. Additional details will be discussed during the interview process. Certain visa types and funding sources may limit work location. Individuals must meet work location sponsorship requirements prior to employment.
