Position Summary
Lead UX Designers at athenahealth help shape intuitive, scalable experiences that support healthcare teams doing essential work every day. In this role, you will lead UX efforts for athenaOne by defining, designing, and testing workflows in partnership with product managers, engineers, researchers, and other cross-functional teammates. You will focus on improving how users complete complex claim preparation, submission, and resolution tasks across a web-based product environment. This role is based in Boston, MA, with a hybrid work mode, and reports to the Experience Design Director.
About the Team
The athenaOne design team works to improve the experience of tools used by practice managers, medical providers, coders, and billers. The team partners closely with product, engineering, data analytics, service operations, and customers to identify needs, design solutions, and evaluate outcomes. Team members use research, design systems, prototypes, and workflow analysis to guide product decisions and improve usability. Their work supports a large, multi-disciplinary agile product development environment.
Essential Job Responsibilities
Plan and conduct primary and secondary user research to inform product decisions
Synthesize research findings into clear problem statements and opportunity areas
Design scalable web-based product experiences that support complex workflows
Create sketches, wireframes, prototypes, and detailed design specifications
Drive alignment through design narratives, reviews, and cross-functional discussions
Identify opportunities to improve existing experiences and simplify user workflows
Make informed tradeoffs related to scope, design strategy, and implementation
Incorporate feedback from users and cross-functional partners throughout the design process
Apply AI tools to support research synthesis, idea generation, and workflow exploration, and adapt to new AI capabilities that improve design productivity

Promote design best practices across product, engineering, and design partners
Contribute to information architecture and end-to-end experience planning for major product areas
Support product roadmap discussions by connecting design priorities to business and technical goals
Facilitate workshops and working sessions that build shared understanding of user needs
Ground design recommendations in user research, product data, and success metrics
Collaborate with junior designers by sharing design rationale and practical feedback
Support continuous improvement of design processes and team working methods
Expected Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in design, human-computer interaction, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
5+ years of professional product design experience in healthcare, enterprise, or financial systems required
Experience leading significant product design initiatives in a complex product environment required
Experience working with agile or scrum teams required
Experience partnering across product, engineering, research, and operations functions required
Experience solving complex user problems through research, interaction design, and iterative testing required
Figma experience required
Experience using AI tools to support design work; experience designing for AI-enabled products preferred
Codex and Claude Code experience preferred.
Experience influencing cross-functional partners across products, teams, or geographies preferred
Strong ability to articulate and document design rationale and tradeoffs required
Portfolio demonstrating problem framing, interaction design, design communication, and visual attention to detail required
Understanding of U.S. healthcare workflows and a desire to build expertise in the healthcare space preferred
Expected Compensation
$119,000 - $201,000The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates. Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
