About the Role

We are hiring a Director of Engineering to lead and scale the engineering teams responsible for Blitzy’s most critical production systems. Reporting directly to the CTO, you will own engineering execution across our backend platform, infrastructure, and AI product surface — directly managing and developing a team of Principal and Senior Engineers.

This is a hands-on leadership role. You will be expected to stay close to the code, make credible technical decisions, and hold the bar on delivery quality. We are looking for a leader who knows how to get great engineers to do their best work, remove what gets in their way, and drive outcomes that matter to customers.

Responsibilities
  • Lead engineering execution across backend, infrastructure, and AI-powered systems

  • Manage and develop Principal and Senior Engineers, providing clear expectations, feedback, mentorship, and career growth

  • Translate product and business priorities into actionable engineering roadmaps, milestones, and delivery commitments

  • Drive execution across planning, sprint cycles, prioritization, and delivery forecasting

  • Establish engineering practices that promote strong code quality, technical documentation, accountability, and efficient team collaboration

  • Identify technical, operational, and delivery risks early and drive mitigation before they impact customers or business objectives

  • Coordinate production incident response and strengthen system reliability, uptime, and SLA performance

  • Hire and onboard engineering talent while guiding leveling and organizational development decisions

  • Communicate engineering progress, risks, dependencies, and technical tradeoffs clearly to Leadership and cross-functional stakeholders

  • Partner with the CTO, Product, Leadership, and Customer Success teams to align engineering execution with company and customer needs

  • Use metrics, instrumentation, and feedback loops to improve engineering velocity, predictability, and operational performance

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of engineering management experience, including direct management of senior or principal-level engineers.

  • Background in hands-on software engineering with deep backend expertise and the ability to reason effectively about production code

  • Proven track record of delivering complex software products reliably and at scale

  • Experience leading teams that build and operate cloud-native, distributed systems in production environments

  • Strong technical knowledge of Python, microservices, REST APIs, and gRPC

  • Familiarity with GCP, AWS or Azure, Kubernetes, and Terraform

  • Experience with PostgreSQL and NoSQL databases; exposure to vector or graph databases is a plus

  • Understanding of LLM-powered product development and AI evaluation or production pipelines

  • Demonstrated success in hiring, leveling, mentoring, and developing engineers within a startup or high-growth environment

  • Ability to engage credibly in technical design discussions and challenge architectural decisions constructively

  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain technical concepts, risks, and tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical stakeholders

  • Demonstrated judgment in balancing product velocity, engineering quality, system reliability, and long-term technical sustainability

  • Experience with platform or infrastructure modernization initiatives that improved reliability, scalability, or engineering velocity is a plus

  • Exposure to AI-native or LLM-powered product companies and enterprise-grade engineering environments is a plus
