Data Engineer, Senior Associate (athenahealth, Inc.; Boston, MA): 

Data Maintenance (40%): Support seamless flow of data from source to front-end application; Use SQL and other tools like Powershell to monitor, aggregate, and analyze data in order to explain performance variation and trends as client data is migrated into athenahealth’s systems; Create Power BI reporting to summarize process status and data issues in order to ensure proper operational process execution and validate data for accuracy; Develop T-SQL scripts to send automated notifications that dynamically generate content to internal teams; Construct processes to convert manual data load workflows into automated processes using SQL and Powershell and create corresponding QA processes to automatically check for data correctness; Proactively identify, research, and work with feed data/programming structure to resolve issues that impact client success; Translate manual QA processes to automated comprehensive checks of entire dataset leveraging technologies such as SQL, Powershell, and Python; Leverage and build test plans and metrics to validate success of team; Hold responsibility for reconciling routine data feeds to system published data; Act as a Subject-Matter-Expert with regard to analysis of source data; Provide updates to stakeholders around the structure of client data feed workflows in order to client requests; Build reports that shows success of each team leveraging technologies like PowerBI and SSRS. Process Improvement/Scalability (30%): Contribute to optimization and automation of standard processes by identifying recurring issues across monthly publishes or across varying client feeds, researching solutions, and executing agreed upon steps in a timely and accurate manner; Analyze client healthcare claims and clinical data to ensure accuracy and identify common checks applicable to entire client base; Construct standard operational procedures and support reporting tools (SQL, Powershell, Power BI, Python) for QA of data, and implement these to optimize operational team workflows; Work on projects that enhance and optimize code base to improve scalability and performance; Identify and quantify areas for technical performance or resourcing performance opportunities leveraging log data available in SQL databases and Splunk; Create Power BI reporting to identify, quantify, and track opportunities for performance improvements real-time for internal users; Develop processes and utilities to automate work using SQL, Powershell, and SSIS where appropriate. Relationship Management (25%): Proactively research and resolve data issues that impact client success; Troubleshoot internal/external concerns related to quality engine by reviewing configuration tables and measure specifications coded in T-SQL stored procedures; Conduct root cause or impact analysis on quality engine and summarize findings; Implement solutions to quality engine via DDL or DML patches source control in BitBucket; Collaborate with internal teams to improve data integration system; Analyze various logs to identify performance trends impacting internal teams and clients; Craft solutions to improve performance and address pain points; Monitor impact of implemented solutions; Operate under Agile development principles and communicate work progress via JIRA; Provide support and guidance to cross-functional teams. Special Projects (5%): Translate business requirements for reporting request to technical steps to be executed; Develop processes to automatically source required data leveraging SQL, SSIS, and Powershell; Construct Power BI dashboards to address ad-hoc reporting requests; Position based at company HQ in Boston, MA. Telecommuting permitted pursuant to company policy following initial period onsite.

Minimum requirements: Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field; and 2 years of relevant IT experience. 

Must have: Demonstrated experience with relational databases; demonstrated experience writing queries and managing data; demonstrated experience with SQL programming; demonstrated understanding of data management tools and analysis techniques; demonstrated experience in analyzing complex business problems; demonstrated knowledge and understanding of healthcare IT product suites and business models; demonstrated ability to learn various technologies and methodologies with minimal training; demonstrated adaptability and comfort with ambiguity relating to development of offerings with diverse requirements, stakeholders, and opportunities; demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with internal and external stakeholders at various cohort levels; demonstrated professional attitude and comfort working in a corporate setting populated by diverse types of people; demonstrated ability to maintain poise and a sense of humor in stressful situations; demonstrated ability to taking a proactive approach to identifying solutions to problems and to taking on work that helps the collective team meet their goals; demonstrated ability to independently prioritize, drive results, and meet deadlines; demonstrated ability to dive deep into information and articulate core findings to the broader group; demonstrated ability to expresses complex issues succinctly and logically; demonstrated ability to execute multiple project work streams simultaneously and transparently, ensuring that all internal and external stakeholders understand the projects’ goals and deliverables; and demonstrated ability to influence others through enthusiasm, commitment, and vision rather than through direct line authority.
