Desktop Metal becomes Boston tech’s latest unicorn with $115M Series D

This week, 3D printing startup Desktop Metal raised a $115 million Series D, putting the company's post-money valuation above $1 billion. The round also marked the largest individual private round for a metal additive manufacturing company ever. The new round, led by top investors New Enterprise Associates, GV (formerly Google Ventures) and GE Ventures, brings Desktop Metal’s total funding to $212 million. [Built In Boston]

NewStore reels in $50M Series B round

This week, mobile retail platform NewStore raised a $50 million Series B, led by Activant Capital with participating investments from General Catalyst Partners and Schambach. The new round brings the company’s total funding to $90 million. According to a press release, the funding will be used the to roll out NewStore’s product to more brands and retailers, expand its team and expand its software capabilities. Ultimately, NewStore aims to arm brands and retailers with mobile-first tools and strategies that consumers have come to expect from companies like Amazon. [Built In Boston]

Rapid7 pays $50M for cybersecurity startup Komand

Boston’s Rapid7 announced this week that it had acquired Komand, a cybersecurity company founded less than two years ago by entrepreneur Jen Andre. Though Rapid7 is not disclosing the terms of the deal, a source familiar with the acquisition reportedly told Boston Business Journal that the company paid $50 million in cash and stock awards for Komand. The source also said a number of other security firms were interested in acquiring Komand, including Waltham-based Carbon Black. [Boston Business Journal]

Dog DNA startup Embark moves to Boston, raises $4.5M

Embark, a startup that makes dog DNA test kits, raised $4.5 million in funding this week to expand their canine genetic testing suite for pet parents, breeders and veterinarians. The company’s “Dog DNA Test” has been dubbed the most comprehensive pet genetic test on the market, tracking over 200,000 genetic markers. The new round brings Embark’s total funding to $6.5 million since the company’s inception two years ago. Startups love seltzer water — and Boston company Bevi has been capitalizing on that fervent love since 2013. With a fresh $16.5 million in funding led by early Starbucks backer Trinity Ventures, the smart water cooler startup shows no signs of slowing down its nationwide expansion.
