Description
The VP, Sr Dir, Finance Technology reports to the CIO, Corporate Technology and leads the technology strategy, portfolio, and organization supporting Global Finance. Global Finance Technology (GFT) enables the mission-critical processing and analysis of Liberty Mutual's ~$50B in annual revenue, and this leader will shape the modern platforms, data capabilities, and AI-enabled experiences that support Liberty's Finance transformation through 2030 and beyond. This is an opportunity to join Liberty Mutual at a pivotal moment in its Technology transformation, with the mandate, scale, and executive visibility to help modernize how we operate, makes decisions, and create enterprise value.
The role is accountable for both transformation and execution, modernizing and simplifying the Finance technology landscape across general ledger, accounting, treasury, tax, reinsurance, data, and enterprise risk and actuarial, while maintaining secure, stable, and resilient operations. The leader will oversee an organization of approximately 220 employees and 300 contractors, with an annual technology investment of approximately $200M, and partner closely with the Liberty's Office of the CFO community to translate business priorities into measurable outcomes.
This is a senior technology leadership role requiring credibility across engineering, enterprise platforms, data, architecture, and AI, at a scale and breadth spanning multiple core financial ecosystems and global business units spanning ~29 countries. Equally important is the ability to influence and challenge executives, navigate complexity, make difficult tradeoffs, and lead teams through sustained, multi-year transformation. The successful candidate will build a high-performing, inclusive organization and create clarity, accountability, and momentum across a broad ecosystem of internal teams and external partners. The role requires a holistic leadership approach and breadth of perspective, drawing on enterprise and industry trends, to enable a high-performing, adaptable technology function and a data-first culture, led with an inclusive culture that fosters innovation, trust, people development, and integrity.
What This Role Is Accountable For:
1. Transformation Through Technology Execution
  • Lead the modernization and simplification of the end-to-end Finance technology ecosystem: general ledger, accounting, treasury, tax, reinsurance, enterprise risk and actuarial, data, integration, security, and the Finance vendor landscape
  • Drive transformation across central and business-unit-specific financial ecosystems in a mixed legacy and modern environment, balancing large 3rd-party software partnerships (SAP experience a plus) with custom, cloud-native solutions
  • Make durable platform decisions that reduce structural risk, improve resilience, and compound value through 2030 and beyond, balancing near-term delivery with multi-year modernization
  • Ensure Finance system, technical, and product architectures stay aligned with business objectives

2. Strategic Partnership & Constructive Challenge
  • Act as a trusted technology and transformation partner to Liberty's CFO community and Finance leadership, co-owning outcomes, not just delivery, and shape how leaders think about technology, data, AI, and operating models
  • Challenge functional leaders constructively and directly, bringing clarity to tradeoffs, sequencing, and change absorption across a multi-year Finance transformation
  • Build partnerships with Finance leaders, vendors, and technology peers, and move leaders forward even amid ambiguity or resistance

3. Outcome-Driven Delivery & Accountability
  • Own execution and results across the Finance technology investment portfolio (~$200M annual) and a technology organization of ~220 employees plus ~300 contractors
  • Jointly set financial targets with Finance partners and ensure programs, including multiple multi-year initiatives, deliver to plan
  • Ensure investments translate into measurable outcomes: speed, quality, control, productivity, and economics
  • Drive disciplined prioritization, dependency management, resource allocation, and delivery rigor across teams and partners accountable for outcomes, not activity

4. Technology Excellence & Ecosystem Leadership
  • Serve as an active member of the Corporate Technology function and Liberty Mutual Technology's Extended Leadership Team, contributing a Finance perspective to Liberty Mutual's enterprise technology agenda
  • Champion Liberty Mutual Technology's strategic priorities and translate enterprise strategy into Finance execution: high-performing engineering, AI-enabled SDLC evolution, modern architecture, and resilient operations
  • Lead adoption of modern engineering practices: product-centric delivery, platform thinking, automation, and AI across the SDLC
  • Apply and evolve enterprise standards for architecture, security, data, and AI, balancing consistency with the realities of Finance transformation
  • Craft and deliver an enterprise data strategy, anticipate technology evolution, and ensure Finance decisions strengthen the broader Liberty Mutual technology ecosystem

5. Talent, Culture & Change Leadership
  • Build and lead a high-performing Finance technology organization that thrives in sustained transformation
  • Build a flexible, adaptable workforce strategy (headcount, skills, experience, and full-time/professional-services mix) focused on skills for the future, and hire, develop, and coach the next line of technology leaders
  • Foster a culture of direct communication, learning, inclusion, and execution excellence, and model courage in addressing conflict and making hard calls

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a technical or business discipline, or equivalent experience; Master's preferred
  • Minimum 15 years of related experience, including 5+ years in senior technology leadership
  • Seasoned technology leader with a proven record leading large-scale, multi-year transformations in complex, regulated environments, with deep finance and insurance business acumen and understanding of how technology can be leveraged to support business strategy
  • Demonstrated ability to influence, challenge, and partner with executives on operating models, sequencing, investment tradeoffs, and change absorption, addressing conflict directly for better outcomes
  • Hands-on credibility across 3rd-party platform implementations (SAP experience a plus) and cloud-native, homegrown solutions (full-stack AWS, data transformation, data warehousing, and business intelligence/reporting)
  • Proven experience crafting and delivering an enterprise data strategy
  • Proven change leader who has built resilient, high-performing teams through sustained transformation, and translates vision into actionable deliverables
  • Strong vendor and ecosystem leadership, selection, governance, and value realization across major Finance platforms and delivery partners (software, consulting, and outsourcing)
  • Financial and operational acumen, including ownership of multi-year technology investment portfolios (labor, compute, software) and blended workforce strategies
  • Ability to partner closely and establish strong, trusted working relationships to make impacts beyond technology. E.g., contributing to the larger Finance transformation at Liberty
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills, able to go deep while staying focused on the big picture
  • Effective, highly articulate communicator able to convey important messages verbally and in writing to all organizational levels
