Reporting to the President of Diagnostics, this role is responsible for leading the organization in all aspects of upstream marketing and portfolio management. Leading a team of Product Managers, this role synthesizes industry, customer, product, and competitive inputs in order to generate product and portfolio strategies that help to generate best-in-class products/services, while maximizing revenue for the company.  Following the standards of a phase-gate Product Development Process (PD), this role guides their team in the concept and development for new products, product enhancements and product design. They will lead development and execution of strategic focus areas for the business - where to play and how to win - for growing the Diagnostics business to a specific revenue target over a multi-year period. During the first 30 days of employment, the President and this person will create and prioritize a list of initiatives to grow the business. 

This individual will support the creation and execution plan to achieve the long term strategy, working closely with the President of Diagnostics and their respective team to articulate that vision internally and externally to align the organization to the plan. Together, they will continue to evaluate and refine the list of initiatives based on experimentation and customer feedback. The SVP, Product will have five direct reports, who are leads of respective disease area portfolios, customer experience and digital products.

Responsibilities: 

  • Portfolio Strategy: Develop near and long-term portfolio vision, strategy and roadmap for Tempus’ oncology, hereditary, rare disease and algorithmic products, while considering the cross-portfolio investments based on analysis of customer needs, competitive landscape, internal feasibility, and financial and strategic value.  Deliverables include:

    • Intermediate and longer-term franchise plans, prioritizing new product and other business growth opportunities (e.g, WGS strategy, tissue, liquid, hereditary and heme portfolio strategies)

    • Near-term franchise plans for assay improvements, product changes, customer experience priorities to deliver the optimal product to patients and providers

    • Develop, Socialize and Align core target product profiles (TPPs)

    • Commercialization and lifecycle management plans

  • Cross Functional Collaboration: Collaborate with cross-functional leadership (sales, marketing, market access, medical, product, R&D, customer success, etc.) to deliver on business goals for the Tempus Diagnostics portfolio

    • Collaborate with leaders across the organization to understand evolving Clinical (and coordinating with corresponding Research/Life Science) customer needs to ensure Portfolio approach is aligned with current and future trends in the market

      • Liaise with clinicians from a training/awareness standpoint, increasing awareness of Tempus across the customer base

      • Ensure Clinical + Research market narrative reflects a broad portfolio of offerings, including a data-first Genomics foundation, as well as emerging market needs 

    • Plan and formulate aspects of research and development proposals such as objective or purpose of project, applications that can be utilized from findings, costs of project, and equipment and human resource requirements

    • Ensure appropriate resource availability and prioritization, including contingency planning

    • Constantly evaluate trade-off decisions to ensure product development speed, efficiency, and quality

    • Partner with Medical for launch clinical evidence and reimbursement strategies to guide new product launch planning

    • Proactively monitor competitive intelligence and customer feedback to identify and act on new threats and opportunities

    • Capture and communicate progress; escalate potential delays with proposed solutions

  • Business Development: Evaluate new business partnership opportunities to deliver new offerings to customers or open new channels to sell. 

  • Partnership Management: Oversee the implementation of new partnerships, foster strong relationships and manage performance of the partnership. 

  • Customer Experience Strategy: Develop short, medium and long term strategies for business growth across the end to end customer experience. 

Required Education & Experience: 

  • Bachelors degree required; A postgraduate qualification (e.g., Ph.D., MBA, MS) will be a distinct advantage 

  • Knowledge of product development phase-gated process (ie., PDP), concepts and techniques is required

  • 15+ years of experience in analytical roles such as business strategy, finance, sales operations, and/or business intelligence, including 8+ years of experience in commercial strategy and/or product management

  • 8+ years of experience managing direct reports

  • Strong business acumen, including the ability to translate data insights into action plans

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

  • Entrepreneurial mindset and comfort with ambiguity

  • Solutions-oriented and biased to action

  • Commercial experience in oncology and related segments, with clinician-facing products, and/or within a life sciences organization

Pay Range: $330,000.00 - $430,000.00

The expected salary range above is applicable if the role is performed from Illinois and may vary for other locations (California, Colorado, New York). Actual salary may vary based on qualifications and experience. Tempus offers a full range of benefits, which may include incentive compensation, restricted stock units, medical and other benefits depending on the position.
