As VP of Engineering at Clever, you will lead the engineering organization and own the technical foundation that supports the next stage of the company’s growth. You will set technical direction, develop engineering leaders, raise the talent bar, and improve how quickly the team turns important business problems into reliable software.

This is a technically engaged executive role. You will operate across company strategy, organization design, architecture, and execution while remaining close enough to the work to review critical implementations, work through difficult technical problems, and step in directly when your involvement can help the team move faster.

AI is already core to how we build. We are looking for someone who will push that significantly further, using frontier models to change the economics of software development, accelerate modernization of complex systems, and increase the leverage of both engineers and teams across Clever.

• Lead Clever’s engineering organization, setting a high bar for technical quality, ownership, and execution.
• Set technical direction across our core systems, including where to extend, simplify, re-architect, or replace existing technology.
• Stay technically engaged in critical work through architecture reviews, code review, debugging, production issues, and direct contribution when appropriate.
• Improve how work moves from problem framing through implementation and production, helping teams simplify scope and unblock complex initiatives.
• Raise the talent bar through recruiting, coaching, organizational design, and clear performance management.
• Push the frontier on AI-assisted engineering and build the platforms and guardrails that expand AI leverage across the company.
• Partner closely with Product and company leadership to shape solutions, challenge unnecessary complexity, and make clear technical and organizational decisions.

• Significant software engineering experience, including leadership of engineering managers and senior technical leaders.
• Strong technical depth across architecture, implementation, debugging, and production systems.
• Experience inheriting and evolving complex production systems, with sound judgment about when to extend, refactor, or replace them.
• Track record of improving engineering execution while building and developing high-performing teams.
• Strong product and business judgment, including close partnership with Product and executive leadership.
• Deep hands-on experience with frontier AI development tools and a strong point of view on how AI is changing software engineering.

• Experience helping a startup scale through multiple stages of growth, including evolving the engineering team, operating model, and technical foundation as the company became more complex.
• Experience leading a lean, high-autonomy engineering organization where leaders remain close to the technology.
• Experience modernizing or replacing significant legacy systems while continuing to support a live business.
• Experience with integration-heavy or operationally complex systems such as marketplaces, CRMs, workflow automation, communications platforms, or third-party APIs.
• Experience using AI to materially change the speed or economics of major engineering work and enable non-engineering teams to build more safely.
• Familiarity with some of our stack, including AWS, JavaScript, Python/Django, PostgreSQL, and Ruby on Rails, or experience in real estate, fintech, marketplaces, vertical SaaS, or another operationally complex business.
