Design immersive VR interfaces, service experiences, fleet management applications, and operational tools for general-purpose robots. Conduct user research, usability testing, prototyping, and validation while collaborating with engineering and operations teams. Establish design systems, standards, and culture as an early design hire, with emphasis on human factors, human-robot interaction, operator trust, situational awareness, and usability in complex real-time environments.

At Walden Robotics, we envision a world where general-purpose robots dramatically improve the quality of life for all people—supporting us at home, at work, in factories, on farms, and beyond. To accomplish this, we are building a team of exceptional professionals who combine world-class technical skills with creative vision, grounded in humility and collaboration.

Walden's general-purpose robots do useful work alongside people today, and they get better by practicing in the real world.

In this role you will work closely with users to understand their needs, and you will design interfaces that make complex, real-time work feel intuitive. You will own the design from foundational research to prototyping to validation. The surfaces range from immersive spatial interfaces to fleet management applications and internal operational tooling.

This is a scrappy, high-ownership role for someone who wants to wear multiple hats, set a high craft bar, and help shape our design culture as an early hire on a growing team. We're looking for a builder at heart: someone who is happiest making things, sweats the details, and who holds a high bar for quality.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Design the immersive VR-based interface used to understand what a robot is doing and direct it with confidence and comfort.
  • Own end-to-end service design: map how work flows across people, robots, and tools, and design the connective tissue needed for a seamless experience.
  • Collaborate with our engineering and ops teams to bring interfaces to life and deploy them with quality.
  • Run discovery and usability testing with our operations team, and iterate quickly on what you learn.
  • Help lay the foundations of our design practice—craft, design system, standards, and culture—as one of the earliest members of a growing team.

Required Qualifications:

  • Deep interaction and visual craft, with a portfolio showing clarity and usability in complex, data-rich, or real-time experiences.
  • Strong systems and service thinking, with an ability to design a coherent journey across multiple touchpoints and handoffs.
  • Comfort running your own discovery and usability testing, and turning findings into design decisions.
  • A track record of thriving in ambiguity, wearing multiple hats, and moving from vague problem to shipped solution with a high level of autonomy.
  • A bias toward prototyping (in Figma, low-fi mockups, code, etc.) to learn and iterate quickly.
  • Expertise or interest in human factors and human-robot interaction (HRI): latency, presence, situational awareness, and operator trust and fatigue.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Hands-on experience designing for VR, AR, or other spatial/3D interfaces, with an understanding of the interaction, comfort, and ergonomic realities of head-mounted displays.
  • Experience designing for robotics or gaming.
  • Familiarity with Unity, Unreal, or other 3D/XR design tooling.
  • Experience building and maintaining design systems.
  • Comfort using AI/agentic tools to accelerate and improve your work.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
