Human Interest is on a mission to ensure that people in all lines of work have access to retirement benefits.

More than half of all working Americans are not saving enough for their future. Too often, it’s because they are employed by a company that doesn’t offer a retirement plan. Human Interest is changing that by making it affordable and accessible for small and medium-sized businesses to offer employees a path to financial independence through retirement savings.

We’re a high-growth fintech company changing the retirement industry. We are backed by a number of investors. This includes funding from Marshall Wace and Baillie Gifford, as well as top investors such as BlackRock, TPG (The Rise Fund), SoftBank, Glynn Capital, NewView Capital, USVP, Wing, Uncork, and more.

About the role

As an engineer on the Shared Services team, you will help build our platform services. These  include our auth service for authenticating and authorizing end users to access our product and our notification service responsible for electronic and paper mail communication to our customers. We are looking for customer centric engineers that are passionate about building libraries and services for other engineers and improving the security, availability, and resiliency of our platform for our customers.

What you get to do every day

  • Drive developer productivity through shared libraries, internal tools, and platform services.
  • Design and build secure, reliable, and scalable systems with a focus on user and customer needs.
  • Write clean, well-tested code that is easy to maintain and enables easy observability.
  • Hold high standards for code quality through code reviews and efficient processes.
  • Mentor other engineers and elevate productivity of the engineering team.
  • Collaborate with engineers and stakeholders to define and hold a high standard of  engineering excellence.
  • Take ownership of the service lifecycle—from architecture through deployment and support.
  • Continuously improve our engineering tools, infrastructure, and deployment pipelines.

What you bring to the role

  • Minimum 6 years of professional experience in designing, building, and scaling services, especially using cloud infrastructure such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Experience designing and operating large scale, distributed systems and platform services like auth and email.
  • Strong communication skills: you can easily discuss complex technical concepts with both engineers and non-engineers.
  • Strong ownership and bias for action: You love to roll up your sleeves.
  • You are proactive, drive projects from start to finish, and lead cross-functional projects, while keeping stakeholders informed.
  • Ability to write understandable, testable code with an eye towards maintainability.
  • Proactive and empathetic mindset - you love to roll up your sleeves to fix problems for our customers.

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
