About the Job

Berkshire Grey is a leader in AI-enabled robotics, providing innovative automation solutions for e-commerce, retail replenishment, package handling, and logistics operations. Our technology automates complex warehouse tasks such as picking, packing, sorting, and trailer unloading.

As a Software Engineer on Berkshire Grey’s Scoop robotic trailer-unloading program, you will design, implement, test, deploy, monitor, and maintain software that creates, integrates, and improves the system’s robotic capabilities.

You will work with a multidisciplinary team to develop software that controls physical robotic behavior and coordinates the components required to unload packages safely, reliably, and efficiently. This role spans the complete software lifecycle, from defining and designing new capabilities through deployment, performance analysis, and support of systems operating in real-world customer environments.

This is an ideal role for a software engineer who enjoys solving difficult problems at the intersection of software, robotics, and physical automation—and who is motivated by seeing their work operate on real systems.

Responsibilities

  • Design, implement, test, deploy, monitor, and maintain software for Berkshire Grey’s robotic trailer-unloading product.
  • Develop software components that control and coordinate robotic behavior and other physical system functions.
  • Translate product, system, and customer requirements into reliable and maintainable software solutions.
  • Work closely with robotics, controls, perception, hardware, systems, test, product, and field engineering teams.
  • Develop automated tests, simulation workflows, and system-level test methods to validate new capabilities.
  • Debug complex issues that span software, hardware, sensors, controls, and robotic behavior.
  • Analyze system performance and operational data to identify reliability, quality, and throughput improvements.
  • Support software integration, system commissioning, and troubleshooting on development and customer systems.
  • Participate in architecture discussions, design reviews, code reviews, sprint planning, and other engineering activities.
  • Improve software quality, observability, test coverage, deployment practices, and maintainability.
  • Document software designs, interfaces, operating behavior, and troubleshooting procedures.
  • Communicate plans, progress, technical tradeoffs, and risks clearly to engineering stakeholders.
  • Travel to customer or development sites when needed to support integration, testing, deployment, and troubleshooting.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Robotics, Engineering, or a related field with 5+ years of professional software development experience; or a master’s degree with 3+ years of experience.
  • Strong software development expertise in Python and/or C++.
  • Experience across the full software development lifecycle, including design, implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, and maintenance.
  • Experience developing software in a fast-paced Agile environment.
  • Experience developing software on Linux, preferably Ubuntu.
  • Experience with Git-based version control and issue-tracking systems such as Jira.
  • Strong commitment to delivering well-designed, well-implemented, and thoroughly tested software that meets internal and customer requirements.
  • Ability to monitor and maintain deployed software to ensure reliability and quality.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary engineering team.
  • Ability to work through ambiguous or loosely defined problems and independently scope, plan, and implement effective solutions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with robotics, industrial automation, or robotic material-handling systems.
  • Experience with parallel or distributed software systems.
  • Experience with asynchronous or concurrent programming, including Python Asyncio or similar frameworks.
  • Experience with messaging and communication technologies such as Kafka, gRPC, or similar systems.
  • Experience with software-based simulation tools and techniques.
  • Experience with ROS or ROS2.
  • Experience integrating software with sensors, actuators, programmable logic controllers, or other industrial hardware.
  • Familiarity with warehouse automation, logistics, package handling, or trailer-unloading applications.

Why Berkshire Grey?

  • Opportunity to work with cutting-edge AI-powered robotic solutions that are transforming the supply chain and logistics industry.
  • A culture of innovation and collaboration, with a commitment to professional development and growth.
  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits package.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
