Toast creates technology to help restaurants and local businesses succeed in a digital world, helping business owners operate, increase sales, engage customers, and keep employees happy.

At Toast, we are committed to empowering our customers by providing the technology, resources, and community they need to thrive. While our roots are in food service, we are rapidly expanding into adjacent markets and international territories. Our mission is to build a world-class Device Management platform that supports the diverse needs of all Toast customers, regardless of their industry or location.

As a member of the Android Systems team, you will bridge the gap between hardware and software to build the foundational platform for Toast POS devices. Whether it’s an international team looking to deploy a new on-device application, a customer needing a critical firmware update, an Enterprise group needing multi-location device tooling - our systems empower customers to set up, secure, and manage their devices from wherever they are.

Why this team?

  • Expanding the Vision: We are expanding our Mobile Device Management ecosystem—unifying firmware, on-device apps, and security controls into one cohesive platform.
  • Frictionless Device Management: We are transforming the customer’s device lifecycle experience from out-of-the-box setup to continuous remote management, leveraging AI to dramatically reduce operator’s time spent troubleshooting and configuring devices.
About this roll* (Responsibilities):
  • Own the design and delivery of features across Toast's Android system applications in Kotlin and Java, including device policy enforcement, out-of-box device setup, and firmware and app updates.
  • Write technical designs for features that span on-device apps, cloud services, and Toast hardware, and lead effort estimation and planning for your projects.
  • Build reliable background services that run on devices with little to no user interaction, and deploy them safely to the Toast fleet using feature flags, staged rollouts, and monitoring for success.
  • Lead Android application upgrades in support of new Toast Hardware and Android OS upgrades for our system apps, working closely with Hardware and Firmware partners.
  • Raise the quality bar by expanding our end-to-end automated testing on real Toast hardware with Robot Framework, reducing manual regression testing.
  • Lead the investigation of complex production issues across the fleet, and partner with Customer Care and pilot customers during device rollouts.
  • Mentor engineers on the team through code review, design feedback, and pairing.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Hardware, QA, and other Software teams to build scalable systems, making solid technical decisions with quality, security, and maintainability in mind.
  • Leverage cutting edge AI tools to enhance your development workflow, improve velocity, and help pioneer new approaches to building, contributing to a culture of innovation and productivity across the team.
Do you have the right ingredients*? (Requirements):
  • 6+ years of Android application development experience.
  • Proficient in a modern object-oriented programming language such as Kotlin or Java.
  • Deep experience with standard Android architecture patterns & libraries such as Hilt, AndroidX libraries, and Kotlin Coroutines.
  • Solid understanding of Android application and service lifecycles, background work, and inter-process communication.
  • Experience leading a cross-functional project with multiple engineers, product, QA, & design teams on a project from initial ideation through launch and supporting it in production.
  • Proven ability to debug complex issues across the app, framework, and OS layers using tools such as adb, logcat, and bug reports.
  • Experience using AI tools throughout the development lifecycle, from design and coding to testing and debugging.
  • Clear written and verbal communication, including writing technical designs.
  • Strong customer empathy and a drive to build reliable tools that make restaurant operators' lives easier.
Bonus ingredients*:
  • Experience developing Android software for devices domain accounting for offline mode, battery impact, background services, etc.
  • Experience with the Android framework, AOSP, system services, or system apps written in Kotlin or Java.
  • Experience with Android Device Owner / Device Policy Controller APIs.
  • Understanding of mobile device management (MDM) concepts and enterprise device management platforms.
  • Experience shipping software to a large fleet of devices (e.g., OTA updates, staged rollouts).
  • Experience writing automated tests using Robot, UIAutomator or other testing frameworks.
What we use to make our dish* (Our Tech Stack):
  • Android system apps written in Kotlin with modern Android libraries, running with device-owner privileges on Toast hardware.
  • Kotlin backend services built on AWS that manage device policies, firmware updates, and device configuration.
  • React and TypeScript web apps built on Toast's in-house design system.
  • End-to-end automated testing on real Toast devices with Robot Framework, alongside unit and integration test suites.
  • Feature flags, staged rollouts, and production monitoring to ship safely to a large device fleet.
