About Pioneering Intelligence

Pioneering Intelligence develops AI capabilities for the Flagship Pioneering ecosystem, including novel architectures of generative models, simulation, and AI reasoning systems. We unify and accelerate the AI innovation of Flagship’s integrated model of science, entrepreneurship, and capital.

The Role

Pioneering Intelligence is building a growing portfolio of tools, apps and agentic systems on shared capabilities in data, models and agents. We are seeking a Senior Director, Platform Experience to turn that portfolio into one platform that scientists trust and adopt. You will set the experience vision and architecture for the platform, define how scientists work with AI agents, and build the design system that teams across PI and the Flagship ecosystem ship with.

You will report to the VP of Platform for Pioneering Intelligence. You will work every day with product managers, engineers, ML researchers, computational biologists and the scientists who use PI’s tools, and you will be design’s voice to PI leadership.

This is a hands-on role. You will personally design and ship the scientific workflows that define the platform, from research and early concepts through coded prototypes, production UI and QA. You will also shape how design works inside an AI-driven development lifecycle, choosing and evolving the AI-assisted tools that connect design intent with working software.

Key Responsibilities

  • Set the experience vision and architecture for PI’s platform
  • Define how scientists work with AI agents
  • Personally design and ship end-to-end scientific workflows
  • Develop a coded design system used across PI and the Flagship ecosystem
  • Build design into an AI-driven development lifecycle

Professional Experience and Qualifications

Experiences

  • Design leadership for complex platforms. You have 10 or more years in product design, including leading design for complex technical or scientific platforms.
  • Unifying fragmented tools. You’ve turned a set of separate tools into one platform experience with a clear structure, and people adopted it.
  • Shipping AI products. You’ve shipped agents, LLM-powered workflows or retrieval over proprietary data to production. You designed for trust and explainability, so users could check what the AI did.
  • Designing for scientists or other technical experts. You’ve designed for life-sciences R&D, working directly with researchers and scientists. We will also consider experience in another technically complex domain if you can show you get up to speed fast in new areas.
  • Building a design system in code. You’ve built a design system and pattern library in code that multiple teams adopted.

Skills

  • Experience architecture. You can design object models, information architecture and navigation that hold together across many products and surfaces.
  • Interaction and visual craft. You take work all the way to polished, production-ready UI, not only wireframes.
  • Prototyping in code with AI tools. You prototype in code. You’ve put AI-assisted design and development tools to work on a team to connect design intent with working software.
  • Research and evidence. You turn interviews, observation and usage data into product and roadmap decisions.
  • Executive communication. You explain strategy, trade-offs and resource needs clearly to leadership and get decisions made.

Traits

  • Strategy and detail. You set direction and do the pixel-level work in the same week.
  • Ownership through release. You stay with your work through implementation and QA, partner closely with engineers, and know where to spend your effort.
  • Curiosity about the science. You want to understand how scientists work, and you learn fast from experts.
  • Experimental with new tools. You try emerging tools, evaluate them honestly and keep what works.
  • Comfort with ambiguity. You keep making progress while the platform and the role take shape.

Why Pioneering Intelligence?

  • Define the experience of an AI-native platform at the intersection of AI and life sciences
  • Shape how scientists across the Flagship ecosystem work with AI agents
  • Work hands-on with visionary scientists, founders and builders across Flagship’s ecosystem
  • Competitive compensation and benefits, including equity, commensurate with experience
