Overview

Velir is seeking a Senior Content Strategist for upcoming website and digital experience projects contracts. You’ll work on enterprise-level sites (often at least 5k- 30k URLs), using strategic judgment, data analysis, and technical skills to find problems, recommend fixes, and help teams act on them. When existing tools don’t fit a project’s needs, you’ll adapt them or build something lightweight that does.

You’ll lead defined workstreams, present projects to clients independently, and work closely with our content strategy lead, designers, developers, and client teams. Each workstream starts with a structured briefing or handoff and includes agreed review checkpoints with the content strategy lead.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead large-scale content audits, combining crawl data, analytics, SEO data, and qualitative review to recommend what to keep, improve, consolidate, or retire.
  • Clean, combine, and analyze large content datasets, find patterns and gaps, and turn the findings into prioritized recommendations.
  • Build or adapt tools and workflows for content analysis and delivery, using self-directed or AI-assisted coding, scripts, automation, or lightweight prototypes. Check that the outputs are accurate, and document how each tool works so others can use it.
  • Develop information architecture, navigation, taxonomy, and content requirements for search, based on audience needs and business goals.
  • Make page-level recommendations on content hierarchy and messaging priorities, and create content priority guides when a project calls for them.
  • Create polished presentations and visuals that help clients understand findings, weigh options, and make decisions.
  • Present recommendations, revise them based on feedback, and work with design and development teams to carry them through implementation.
Skills & Qualifications:
  • 5+ years of content strategy experience, ideally at an agency or consultancy, and a portfolio of work on complex websites.
  • Experience assessing sites with thousands of pages and turning messy or incomplete data into defensible recommendations.
  • Ideal knowledge of Screaming Frog, web analytics platforms, and SEO research tools, and the ability to interpret and combine their outputs.
  • Practical experience using tools such as Codex, Claude, or Figma Make to solve problems, automate repetitive work, or explore ideas, plus sound judgment about checking their output and handling client data.
  • The judgment to spot when an existing workflow isn’t working, and the skills to build or adapt a better one, explain how it works, and confirm its results.
  • Technical fluency with structured data and web fundamentals. Ideal familiarity with GitHub and basic scripting or development skills, such as Python, JavaScript, or HTML/CSS, is a plus.
  • Strong presentation design, storytelling, and client communication skills, and clear, organized documentation habits.
  • Comfort working independently, getting up to speed quickly whether you join at kickoff or mid-project, and working with cross-functional teams.
Hiring process:

If you’re shortlisted, we’ll ask you to share an example of a complex content analysis and a client-facing presentation. You’ll then interview with the content strategy lead who will oversee the engagement. We want to hear how you handled the data, chose or built your tools, checked your findings, and turned the work into decisions. If client confidentiality limits what you can share, sanitized examples or walkthroughs are welcome.

Physical Requirements:
  • Frequent sitting at a desk performing work on a computer
  • Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions

Compensation Range: $70-$90/hour

Please note that compensation is finalized after the interview process is concluded. We use a competency-based approach to base pay, which means it is based on the competencies and skills demonstrated for this role.

Core Company Values

  • Be Courageous - Make the right decisions even when they aren't the easiest decisions

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
