ABOUT STRM.BIO
STRM.BIO (pronounced “storm bio”) is a VC-backed biotech startup building a new kind of gene therapy delivery platform based on naturally occurring extracellular vesicles (EVs). We're leveraging the unique biology of EVs to unlock targeted, scalable, and low-immunogenicity genetic medicines that target the bone marrow.
We’re a small, fast-moving team based at The Engine in Cambridge, MA. We believe in simplicity, integrity, and keeping people at the center of everything we do. We’re here to do great science and build a company we’re proud of.
THE OPPORTUNITY
We’re looking for Scientists to help lead and grow our research engine. You’ll work shoulder-to-shoulder with the VP of R&D, Director of Research, and a team of fellow Scientists to drive key programs forward and manage external collaborations. This is a hands-on, highly cross-functional role ideal for someone who’s ready to dive in and execute in equal measure. This is a full-time, on-site role.
WHAT YOU’LL DO (Key Responsibilities)
  • Support the Director of Research and R&D team in managing, coordinating, and supporting the research efforts across multiple collaborative research programs

  • Contribute to, and lead as required, R&D efforts to meet project milestones, maintaining the standards of scientific rigor and adhering to ethical standards

  • Maintain standards consistent with company culture and values

  • Work closely with team members (internal and external) to maintain project development, implementation and troubleshooting of experiments, and ensure deliverables for both internal research projects and external scientific partnerships

  • Generate, analyze, interpret, and share experimental results and ensure that all protocols, reagents, data, and analyses are documented following data integrity principles and prepared and made available in a timely manner

  • Attend and present at team meetings to share results, and plan projects and experiments, with a keen eye for achieving company milestones

  • Maintain comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of extracellular vesicle biology, extracellular vesicles as therapeutics, and novel genetic engineering approaches

  • Perform other duties as assigned, including all those associated with facilitating the smooth operation of a wet lab environment
WHAT YOU BRING (Required Qualifications)
  • Ph.D. in molecular biology, immunology, bioengineering, or related field; strong background in genetic engineering/gene therapy (primary cells/hematopoietic lineages a plus)
  • Experience in in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo studies assessing gene delivery, editing, and expression
  • Hands-on with T-cell–based assays/therapies (cytotoxicity, expansion, CAR-T); autoimmune models a plus
  • Solid working knowledge of genome editing tools (CRISPR, TALEN, ZFNs) and therapeutic editing in preclinical models
  • Strong bench skills in molecular/cell biology (qPCR, RT-PCR, Western, microscopy, multiplex flow cytometry)
  • Experience designing/handling DNA & mRNA molecules; exposure to construct design and NGS workflows preferred
  • Experience with non-viral delivery systems (viral vectors, LNPs, EVs) and associated analytics
  • In vivo experience including vivarium work and animal model handling
  • Familiarity with electronic lab notebooks (ELNs) preferred
  • Experience collaborating with CROs/external partners; CMC familiarity a plus
  • Excellent communicator, highly organized, detail-oriented, collaborative
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint) for data analysis/presentation
  • Bonus: experience with startup ops, grant writing, or early product development
KEY POSITION DETAILS
  • 100% on-site in Cambridge, MA
  • Full time with competitive compensation
    • The salary range for this position is $110,000 to $135,000 USD annually. This salary range is an estimate, and the actual salary may vary based on various factors, including, without limitation, individual education, experience, tenure, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data, including potential adjustments for geographic location.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
