Senior Mechanical Engineer - R&D - Shark
SharkNinja is looking for a highly motivated Mechanical Engineer to join the R&D team within Shark Engineering. We are seeking a creative problem solver who possesses an intuitive grasp of physics and engineering fundamentals. The ideal candidate is comfortable hacking together a prototype in the lab, analyzing the results of a test, and is passionate about solving the tough engineering challenges required to be the first to deliver innovative products to market.
The R&D team researches and develops new technologies and integrates them into new products. We strive to push the boundaries with what is possible across new and existing market segments. Our Mechanical Engineers are responsible for developing these innovative new technologies. They design and build prototypes, run tests to gather data, analyze results, and develop theories that may be referenced in product development here for years to come – or overturned with tomorrow’s test results as they build an even deeper understanding of how things work.
This role is involved heavily at the front-end of the product development cycle, but also supports products all the way up to mass production, continuously working to push performance beyond what was previously thought achievable. The Mechanical Engineer will work collaboratively with other engineers in R&D as well as other disciplines ranging from Electrical Engineering to Product Marketing. The focus of this role is technology R&D, but every member of the team can also impact every aspect of a product’s design ranging from how it’s assembled to how it’s marketed. We’re all product developers and consumers here, and we don’t have any boundaries in the pursuit of making amazing, 5-star-rated products.
Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with R&D, ID, Marketing and Quality teams to develop and design Shark’s next generation products from conception through mass production.
- Research new technologies with constant learning of what would be possible for use tomorrow.
- Create test protocols of products and generate reports per SharkNinja specifications.
- Create and perform DOE to develop a first principles understanding of key variables.
- Design and build prototypes and rigs for internal review, testing, and consumer validation.
- Tear down, debug, and analyze small appliances and electro-mechanical sub-assemblies.
- Review and interpret test results to provide feedback on technology feasibility and product improvements.
- Generate of test reports and proactively communicate status of testing efforts with technical and non-technical teammates.
- Finalize and implement new ideas with out-of-the-box engineering solutions.
- Participate in peer design reviews. Think critically about new product concepts and asking the provocative questions necessary for positive change.
Minimum Qualifications:
- 3-5 years of experience in product design and development.
- Strong understanding of mechanical engineering/physics fundamentals including fluid mechanics, mechanical design, heat transfer, and thermodynamics.
- Solid analytical skills, strong attention to detail, and relentless drive to identify potential problems and take responsibility for their resolution.
- Natural curiosity, positive attitude, and proven ability to deliver robust, elegant, and innovative solutions to complex design challenges.
- Ability to quickly, effectively, and concisely communicate with both technical and non-technical colleagues both verbally and in writing.
- Comfortable multitasking and responding quickly to shifting priorities without losing sight of longer-term projects and goals.
- Understanding of fluid mechanics.
Preferred Qualifications:
- BS or MS in Engineering (Mechanical or similar discipline).
- 3-5 years of related experience in product design and development.
- Experience with hands-on prototype development in plastic and metal including using basic machine shop tools and 3D Printing.
- Experience with electronics (analog/digital), test equipment, and components common in small appliances (sensors, motors, heaters, PCBAs, etc.).
- Ability and creative resourcefulness to hack prototypes and samples to achieve desired performance and/or appearance under tight timelines.
- Familiarity with production processes such as injection molding and sheet metal forming, as well as prototyping techniques such as 3D printing and laser cutting.
- Proficient CAD user (ProE/Creo or SolidWorks).
- Advanced skills in using Excel to generate graphs and charts from test data.
