Recruit experts for a global distributed workforce supporting frontier AI model development. Responsibilities include discovering unconventional talent channels, engaging skeptical domain experts, guiding candidates through assessments and onboarding, analyzing funnel quality, creating repeatable recruiting processes, and eventually building a recruiting team.

About Us

Our mission is to raise AGI with the richness of human intelligence: curious, witty, imaginative, and full of unexpected brilliance.

Surge was founded by engineers and researchers who dreamed of building the next generation of AI. Our platform powers the most capable models in the world, in partnership with the AI models you use every day. We’ve run a profitable business from day one without raising venture funding.

The Role

Frontier models get better when real experts work on them. Those experts have full careers, and they’ve never heard of us.

You’ll recruit for our global, distributed workforce of independent contractors, not for corporate roles. These are experts working on projects that shape how frontier models think. A lot of them don’t work in AI. Some are curious, some are wary, and some think it’s coming for their field. You need to get a reply, then keep them interested through the assessment and onboarding.

The standard playbook won’t get you far. InMail sequences and job boards reach people who are already looking, and most of the experts we need aren’t. You’ll have to work out where they are and what gets a reply.

We don’t count sign-ups. We count experts who finish, pass, and do great work.

We’re hiring a recruiter to own this. You’ll do the work yourself, and, eventually, you’ll build the team around it.

  • Find people other recruiters can’t. Try new channels, formats, and messages. Drop what doesn’t work.

  • Get experts interested who don’t care about AI, and convince the skeptics. Say what the work is, what it isn’t, and why it matters.

  • Talk to experts like experts. Short calls, straight answers, within confidentiality limits.

  • Keep them going after the yes. Work out what gets people through the assessment and into the work.

  • When a search works, make it repeatable: a channel, a referral loop, a small project team.

  • Look at which sources produce great work, not just sign-ups, and spend your time there.

  • Write down what works, teach it, and bring on more recruiters as we grow.

What We’re Looking For

  • You’ve found people in pools nobody else could crack, more than once, and not with the standard playbook. Tell us what you tried and what flopped.

  • When volume grows, you change how the work gets done instead of adding people.

  • You’ve won over people who had no reason to care, or who were skeptical. You can be honest and still persuasive.

  • You can talk to a domain expert as a peer and explain why their work matters to the frontier of AI without hype.

  • You can read a funnel and tell what’s working.

  • You write well. Experts notice.

  • You care whether the people you bring in are actually good.

  • You tell us when our target profile is wrong, and show us why.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
