Lead the design and implementation of a distributed compute control plane for managing virtual machines across Akamai’s cloud fleet. Own database partitioning and sharding, placement reconciliation, asynchronous operations, consistency guarantees, idempotency, fencing, and saga-style workflows. The role requires deep distributed systems, database, containerization, Kubernetes, and controller-pattern expertise, along with strong Python or Go development skills.

Do you want to help design and implement the next generation of cloud computing?

Do you want to help build the future of AI accelerating compute architectures across the Akamai Connected Cloud?

Join our Compute team!

Our team's mission is to accelerate innovation by making computing simple, scalable, accessible, and affordable for all. We provide the infrastructure and services that enable developers to build next-generation applications. We take ownership of the design and development of core compute interfaces, virtualization management, APIs, and low-level platform services.

Partner with the best

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will own the design of the control plane that places, reconciles, and operates VMs across the Compute fleet.

As a Principal Software Engineer Lead, you will be responsible for:

  • Defining the database partitioning and sharding strategy to scale control plane state management 5x, with capacity models for placement and inventory state.
  • Owning the placement reconciliation loop: desired-state model, idempotent reconcilers, drift detection, and reconciliation-lag SLOs.
  • Generalizing bulk and asynchronous operations into one model with standard operation resources, batching, concurrency caps, and automatic halt on failure thresholds.
  • Setting consistency guarantees per data path, enforcing idempotency and fencing on controller actions, and specifying saga-style workflows.

Do what you love

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Have 12 years of experience in building distributed systems along with experience in owning control planes or large-scale orchestration or its equivalent
  • Have deep database experience with SQL, including partitioning, sharding, replication, and online schema change.
  • Have built asynchronous systems: durable task queues, event-driven workflows, and retry and backpressure design.
  • Have hands-on experience building and operating containerized applications, including Kubernetes.
  • Have good competence in Python or Go; experience with the other or with ColdFusion is good, but not required.
  • Have deep understanding of consistency (leases, fencing, idempotency, optimistic concurrency) and hands-on experience with reconciliation or controller patterns (Kubernetes-style controllers or equivalent).

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
