Principal Scientist – Advanced Sensing Technologies
Join a fast‑moving, entrepreneurial team bringing a new sensor‑based product to market. As Principal Scientist, you will lead the scientific strategy, research, and experimentation behind a breakthrough fluid‑analysis sensing platform. Your work will directly shape the product from early concept through MVP and commercial launch.
You’ll work hands‑on to explore, develop, and validate novel sensing approaches - spanning photonic, optical, electrical, and electrochemical modalities - and translate these into robust, manufacturable solutions. You’ll build and refine prototypes, run experiments, interpret results, and partner closely with engineering to make rapid, high‑impact decisions. You will also collaborate with external research groups and technology partners who help accelerate development.
This role is ideal for someone who thrives in fast‑paced environments, enjoys building from first principles, and is energized by the opportunity to turn deep technical insight into a differentiated product.
We're looking for someone with:
- 10+ years researching and productizing novel sensing systems, with a track record of taking technologies from lab to market
- MS or PhD in Physics, Photonics, Optical Engineering, Chemistry, Materials Science, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field
- Deep expertise in sensor development, including photonic, optical, and electrochemical measurement techniques
- Experience designing and developing sensor systems for fluid analysis, including microfluidic or MEMS‑based architectures
- Understanding of material compatibility and biocompatibility in fluid environments
- Experience in analytical chemistry, spectroscopy, or materials characterization for industrial applications
- Strong research fundamentals with the ability to design experiments, analyze complex data, and draw actionable conclusions
- Entrepreneurial mindset with comfort building new capabilities and navigating ambiguity
- Ability to manage external partnerships and coordinate technical work across organizations
- Experience driving IP development and protecting innovations through patents and publications
- Comfort with uncertainty and rapid iteration — building under tight timelines without perfect information
- Collaborative mindset and ability to translate scientific concepts for engineering and commercial audiences
- Willingness to roll up your sleeves and perform hands‑on experimentation when needed
Nice to have:
- Experience building and leading teams of scientists
- Background in fluid chemistry, corrosion science, spectroscopy, or water‑quality analysis
- Familiarity with product development in regulated or mission‑critical environments
Location: Wilmington, MA (hybrid work model)
