Under direction of Head Nurse and/or Program management, the TB clinic supervising nurse coordinates the daily operations of the Boston Public Health Commission/Boston Medical Center Tuberculosis Clinic.
The supervising nurse ensures the appropriate triage of new patients, facilitates the smooth flow of patients to avoid excessive wait times, conducts patient visits, and provides clinical support to other nurses and front desk staff. The supervising nurse additionally assists with triage of referrals and clinical questions, monitors inventory of supplies, ensures compliance with BMC guidelines, and serves as a contact with other providers and agencies for reporting purposes. This nursing leadership position ensures high quality nursing practice within the Tuberculosis Clinic, by overseeing clinical nursing activities and directing and evaluating the professional practice of nurses, according to established standards of care. This position is also expected to work with the nursing leadership to develop standard operating procedures and workflows for Tuberculosis Clinic.
- Ensures adherence to infection control practices and other patient and staff safety measures within the TB Clinic.
- Serves as the on-site clinical supervisor and support for all nursing and administrative staff in the Tuberculosis Clinic.
- Provides direct patient-facing nursing services, including phlebotomy, assessment, patient/family education, medication monitoring, skin testing, and provision of necessary documentation.
- Coordinates with other nurses, agencies, and healthcare facilities to obtain patient records for continuity of care while adhering to HIPAA and reporting requirements.
- Supervises onsite staff working in TB clinic.
- Assists in orientation of new staff, including training in the electronic health record and clinic procedures.
- Identifies or develops resources as needed for patient or community education around TB.
- Participates in special projects and initiatives as requested and acts as clinical back-up for special projects.
- Participates in staff conferences, research activities, meetings with community based or other agencies as requested.
- Plays a key role in providing education and outreach on tuberculosis to health care providers, agencies, and community groups throughout the
city. Acts as a resource on tuberculosis related issues for division staff, providers, and community groups. - Performs other duties as required.
- Works to help BPHC advance as an antiracist organization by meeting or exceeding the standards set by the BPHC Anti-Racism Policy.
- RN licensed in MA
- Bachelor's degree in Nursing or related field required (10 or more years of relevant clinical experience may substitute for bachelor's degree)
- Master's Degree in Nursing, Education, or Public Health preferred
- 3-5 years Public Health experience required
- Prior tuberculosis experience preferred.
- Demonstrated supervisory skills required.
- Strong assessment, planning, evaluation and intervention skills. Excellent teaching and counseling abilities and written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to carry out responsibilities in the home, community, clinic, school, and/or in group multicultural settings.
- Demonstrated leadership and organizational abilities.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations.
- Prior phlebotomy experience preferred or willingness to learn.
- Bilingual (Spanish, Portuguese, Cape Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole, Vietnamese, or Chinese) preferred.
- Valid Mass. drivers license and daily access to working automobile.
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the role of public health in addressing racism, the social determinants of health, and inequities in health outcomes as well as strategies to advance racial justice and health equity.
