The Position

Metalenz is developing next-generation sensing systems for consumer electronics with metasurface technology. As an intern, you will help advance and support the design of our products in imaging and non-imaging optical technologies. A successful candidate will be able to draw from their body of knowledge in metasurface, diffractives, and optics and apply it to problems in meta-optic system design.

What you’ll do

  • Apply your PhD work to our problems, learn about cutting-edge products Metalenz is developing, and get a taste for what it takes to productize meta-optics

  • Work with the design team to integrate new developments and viewpoints into our software toolkit

  • Expand our system design capabilities, breaking free from the viewpoints dominating traditional optics design

  • Apply home-grown techniques to meta-optic system design for a diverse range of consumer applications, particularly for metasurface-integrated image sensors

What you’ll need

  • Currently engaged in PhD in Physics, Applied Physics, Applied Mathematics, or relevant field and/or demonstrated excellence in relevant technical domains through open source contributions or publications

  • Technical background in metasurface physics/optimization, diffractive optics, or computational electromagnetics

  • Comfort working with high-performance computing environments, especially Julia and AWS, or willingness to learn.

  • Experience with MATLAB/Python or commercial/open-source E&M software such as Lumerical, CST Studio, Tidy3D, or MEEP encouraged

  • Eagerness to propose, develop, and test new design and analysis techniques

The Company

Metalenz is driving innovation in optics with metasurface technology, providing image sensing solutions that deliver unprecedented insights to mass market machine vision, enabling advanced sensing and transformative applications to proliferate where compact size & cost-efficient integration is a must for widespread adoption. As the leaders in commercialization, Metalenz innovation has enabled the shift of optics production into the semiconductor foundry, leveraging existing infrastructure and proven manufacturing processes. More than 300 million of the company’s optics have been integrated into consumer devices, replacing conventional lens stacks for compact 3D sensing and resulting in the creation of a rapidly growing metasurface market as use cases rapidly expand.

We are a fast-growing, dynamic company with a vibrant startup culture. Our deeply technical and creative team is dedicated to developing groundbreaking technologies that bring new ways of seeing and sensing to billions of people.
