Lexington Medical, Inc. is hiring a Mechanical Engineering Intern in Bedford, MA for summer 2027 medical device product development. You will test designs, create drawings, support product and process improvements, and see how engineering decisions move from R&D into manufacturing.

About Lexington Medical

Lexington Medical, Inc. is a medical device company designing and manufacturing surgical stapling technology at our headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, just outside Boston. Our AEON™ Endostapler is an FDA-cleared, minimally invasive surgical stapler used in operating rooms around the world. With engineering, manufacturing, and quality working closely together, engineers stay close to the product and see their work move from anF idea through prototyping, testing, manufacturing, and ultimately into the operating room.

About the Internship

As a Mechanical Engineering Intern at Lexington Medical, you will support R&D engineering work across product development, testing, documentation, manufacturing, and supply-chain activities. You will get hands-on exposure to mechanical and process design, common manufacturing methods, engineering testing, inspection, and the documentation required in the medical device industry.

This is not an internship built around observation. You will be expected to contribute to real engineering work, ask good questions, learn quickly, and take increasing ownership as the summer progresses.

Responsibilities

  • Support new product development and continuous improvement work through engineering testing, data collection, and technical documentation.
  • Create and maintain component drawings, test protocols, manufacturing procedures, and engineering reports.
  • Support supply-chain engineering and sourcing activities related to components and product development.
  • Perform quality checks using appropriate inspection instruments and record results accurately.
  • Operate equipment and follow work instructions with increasing independence as you are trained.
  • Support preventative maintenance and maintain the safety and cleanliness of engineering equipment and product.
  • Complete documentation required by Lexington Medical procedures and the medical device quality system.
  • Work closely with engineers across R&D, Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain to solve practical product and process problems.

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related technical discipline.
  • Available to work full-time on-site in Bedford, Massachusetts from June 2027 through August 2027.
  • Prior internship, co-op, or substantial hands-on engineering project experience is preferred.
  • Experience with CAD software such as SolidWorks, Creo, AutoCAD, or a comparable platform.
  • Demonstrated interest in mechanical design, prototyping, testing, manufacturing, or medical devices.
  • Strong attention to detail and comfort following technical procedures and documentation requirements.
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
  • A portfolio showing CAD, design projects, lab work, prototypes, technical reports, or other engineering work is required.

What Success Looks Like

  • Within the first part of the summer, you understand the product-development environment well enough to contribute to testing, drawings, and documentation with increasing independence.
  • By the end of the internship, you can point to specific engineering work you completed that supported an active product, test, process, or manufacturing need.
  • You leave with a stronger portfolio and a much clearer understanding of how mechanical engineering works inside a medical device company.

Portfolio

Please submit a portfolio showing your engineering work. This can include CAD drawings, design projects, prototypes, lab reports, testing, or other technical work from classes, teams, internships, or personal projects.

Program Details

  • Timing: June 2027 through August 2027, approximately three months.
  • Schedule: Full-time, five days per week on-site in Bedford, Massachusetts.

Location & Work Arrangement

This internship is based at our headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, in the Greater Boston area, and is fully on-site five days per week.
