Fabri is seeking a Mechanical Engineer to design and build the equipment that powers every step of our casting process. You will own mechanical systems from concept to commissioned hardware, working closely with process engineers and senior engineering staff to turn process requirements into machines that perform on the production floor.
This role suits a mid-level engineer with hands-on equipment design experience who is ready to take on broader technical ownership. Your work will directly shape Fabri's throughput and scalability as we grow.
The Company
We are an early-stage investment casting startup building a fully integrated digital foundry. Our mission is to deliver precision metal castings with unparalleled speed and cost-effectiveness. By leveraging our exclusive high-throughput additive manufacturing process and AI-driven design software, we deliver castings in days, saving our customers critical time and money. We are well capitalized and backed by top-tier investors and major customers, with significant funding raised in the past year. We have shipped our first customer parts and generated significant commercial interest in both the aerospace and industrial sectors.
Fabri is located in the greater Boston area. During this startup phase and for the foreseeable future, all employees work on-site and take an active part in building and operating the end-to-end process.
Responsibilities
Support build vs. buy decisions with performance analysis and cost estimates
Develop custom manufacturing equipment and subsystems, from requirements definition through detailed design
Translate process requirements into mechanical designs, and use equipment capabilities to open new process regimes
Fabricate and assemble equipment hands-on, from machined components to fully integrated systems
Commission new equipment on the shop floor and bring it into production
Write test plans and run acceptance testing before equipment enters production
Troubleshoot equipment failures to root cause and implement fixes
Design guarding and interlocks into equipment, informed by hazard analysis
Design fixtures and material handling systems that move parts between process steps
Produce detailed drawings with GD&T and tolerance stack-ups for machined and fabricated components
Track requirements and interfaces across tightly coupled subsystems, and assess the downstream impact of design changes
Integrate sensors and actuators into equipment designs to support automation
Design equipment for manufacturability and maintainability as Fabri scales throughput
Present designs at stage-gated technical reviews and document design rationale
Qualifications
Even if you don't meet every qualification, we encourage you to apply. We value curiosity, problem-solving skills, and strong fundamentals.
Bachelor's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering (or a closely related field)
2 to 5 years designing and building equipment or vehicle systems
Proficiency in Autodesk Inventor or a similar CAD platform, with strong GD&T and DFM skills
A track record of taking equipment from CAD to functioning hardware
Hands-on experience machining and fabricating components, and assembling equipment on the shop floor
Experience sourcing components and working with machine shops and fabrication vendors
Solid fundamentals in heat transfer and machine design
A habit of questioning requirements and assumptions
Clear written and verbal communication of technical decisions
Comfort with high ownership and ambiguity in fast-moving startup environments
Preferred Skills
Experience designing equipment for high temperatures, pressures, or vacuum, or for molten and corrosive materials
Background in manufacturing equipment or industrial automation
Aerospace hardware experience, such as propulsion systems or turbomachinery
Experience scaling hardware systems for throughput and reliability
Experience with pneumatic and hydraulic systems
Familiarity with control systems and basic programming
Familiarity with machine safety standards and risk assessment
