About This Role:

Corporate Development leads the establishment of Biogen’s corporate strategy and is responsible for the identification, assessment and negotiation of external opportunities to augment Biogen’s pipeline, as well as integration of acquired companies and management of relationships with Biogen’s partners.

The Business Development Transactions Executive Director will be an individual contributor and leader of a team of Transactions professionals that is responsible for the business evaluation and execution of impactful business development opportunities across therapeutic areas, asset stages, and deal types including R&D or commercial partnerships, licenses, collaborations, and/or acquisitions that fit within the overall corporate strategy, business plan and product portfolio.  This individual will also serve on the Business Development and New Ventures Leadership Team and be responsible for executing New Venture transactions that could include strategic equity investments, build-to-buy and option deals, and NewCo formation.

What You'll Do:

  • Evaluate, structure, negotiate, and close large strategic M&A, BD&L, and New Ventures transactions that align with the company’s global strategic growth initiatives.
  • Lead and shape due diligence from NBO to signing, to advance deals of the highest risk and complexity. Shape the overall deal assessment and develop scenarios, and recommendations for external opportunities.
  • Provide thought leadership and work collaboratively and productively with the Corporate Development organization, with an emphasis on building strong deal teams.
  • Drive execution of opportunities and influences the cross-functional recommendation to advance (or stop) prioritized opportunities.
  • Negotiate on behalf of Biogen the most complex deals under applicable policies and regulations.
  • Lead transaction contracting process and serve as business partner to key corporate functions including legal, finance, tax and accounting
  • Independently lead execution of complex opportunities with focus on business actionability to advance (or stop) opportunities. Integrate complex data sets and provide clear recommendations.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional colleagues to proactively identify external growth opportunities for partnering/acquisitions in multiple therapeutic areas of high priority.
  • Shape the potential pipeline of external growth opportunities for inbound partnering/acquisition in multiple therapeutic areas of high priority. Prioritizes opportunities across therapeutic areas for further evaluation.   
  • Manage, develop, and mentor a small team BD Transactions team with a teamwork-oriented mindset. Prioritize team assignments in alignment with company and functional priorities.
  • Leverage how Corporate Development integrates across multiple functions and coordinates strategic planning to ensure execution of company strategy and investment priorities. 
  • Drive Biogen’s agenda for participation in BD related congresses and conferences

Who You Are:

You are a team player with a demonstrated ability to deliver results in a timely manner and at the highest levels of excellence in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. You must have demonstrated experience in negotiation of multiple deal types and a record of driving BD opportunities to closing. You are a recognized expert and thought leader in Business Development You are considered a strong member of the investment banking and biotech community to identify opportunities to enhance and innovate Biogen’s pipeline

Required Skills:

  • Advanced/graduate degree required, advanced scientific degree with MBA or PhD preferred
  • 15+ years' experience in biopharma, consulting, banking, or related fields
  • 5-10+ years' experience in Business Development or Corporate M&A
  • Substantial deal sheet required, including independently leading and negotiating 10+ closed transactions
  • Recognized expertise in deal negotiation, applicable policies, and regulations
  • Recognized expertise in multiple deal types including strategic M&A, BD&L, and New Ventures transactions
  • Recognized expertise in financial evaluations and analytics and broad and comprehensive knowledge of key disciplines (Legal, Finance, Commercial).
  • Comprehensive knowledge of drug development
  • Broad and comprehensive experience on cross functional project leadership
  • Ability to operate with independence while providing guidance to others
  • Experience shaping the output of  multidisciplinary deal teams and projects. Ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders to bring sound evaluations and recommendations forward to senior management
  • Experience negotiating with and influencing senior management (EC and EC-1) on decision making
  • Experience developing top tier talent, and managing people and tangible contributions to creating a high- performing and engaged team

Additional Information

The base compensation range for this role is: $259,000.00-$366,000.00


Base salary offered is determined through an analytical approach utilizing a combination of factors including, but not limited to, relevant skills & experience, job location, and internal equity.

Regular employees are eligible to receive both short term and long-term incentives, including cash bonus and equity incentive opportunities, designed to reward recent achievements and recognize your future potential based on individual, business unit and company performance.
