JOB TITLE: Director of Product Management- Core AI
Position Summary:
We’re seeking a Director of Product Management, Core AI to lead the strategy and execution for the foundational AI capabilities that will power athenahealth’s AI-native athenaOne strategy. This leader will define how athena standardizes, accelerates, and scales AI across the product portfolio through shared platform components, reusable patterns, governance, developer enablement, and the agent platform.
Why This Role Matters
This role helps power athenahealth’s AI-native future by creating reusable, trusted, and scalable AI capabilities that accelerate innovation across the product portfolio. The work will directly shape how AI is built, governed, and delivered across athenaOne.
About the Team:
Core AI sits at the intersection of product strategy, platform thinking, applied AI, and healthcare workflow transformation. You’ll partner across product, engineering, design, data science, clinical, legal, compliance, security, and business teams to build the capabilities that make AI faster, safer, more consistent, and more impactful across athenaOne.
Essential Job Responsibilities:
Product strategy and vision
Define and communicate the product vision, strategy, and roadmap for Core AI aligned to athena’s broader AI-native athenaOne strategy.
Identify the shared platform capabilities, standards, and operating models needed to accelerate AI adoption across athenaOne.
Translate emerging AI trends into pragmatic product opportunities that improve workflows and reduce administrative burden.
Define where athena should standardize AI capabilities centrally versus where product teams should innovate independently.
Develop investment cases, prioritization frameworks, and success metrics.
AI platform and agent platform leadership
Lead strategy for Core AI platform components, including reusable services, tooling, orchestration, evaluation, and governance.
Own product direction for athena’s agent platform, enabling teams to build, deploy, monitor, and improve AI agents safely and efficiently.
Partner with engineering and architecture leaders to define scalable, secure, reliable, extensible platform capabilities.
Drive requirements for prompt and context management, orchestration, human-in-the-loop workflows, tool use, memory, model routing, evaluation, observability, safety controls, and lifecycle management.
Ensure the platform supports rapid experimentation while maintaining healthcare-grade reliability, compliance, and trust.
Cross-functional execution
Partner with product teams across athenaOne to identify common AI needs, remove duplication, and accelerate delivery.
Work closely with R&D, clinical, legal, compliance, privacy, and security partners to deliver safe and useful capabilities.
Build feedback loops with internal product teams as platform customers.
Communicate priorities, tradeoffs, dependencies, risks, and progress to senior stakeholders.
Lead through influence in a matrixed organization.
Additional Job Responsibilities:
Product delivery and outcomes
Own roadmap planning, prioritization, release planning, adoption goals, and outcome measurement.
Track success metrics such as adoption, development velocity, reuse, quality, reliability, safety, and business impact.
Ensure strong product discipline with clear problem definition, user needs, measurable outcomes, and iterative learning.
Partner with go-to-market, enablement, and internal communications teams to drive awareness and adoption.
Continuously improve usability, reliability, and impact.
Leadership and talent development
Build, lead, and develop a high-performing product management team focused on Core AI.
Coach PMs on platform product management, AI product strategy, stakeholder management, and outcome-oriented execution.
Create a team culture grounded in curiosity, accountability, collaboration, technical depth, and customer impact.
Represent Core AI in executive forums and strategic planning discussions.
Expected Education & Experience:
10+ years of product management experience, including significant experience with platform, infrastructure, enterprise SaaS, AI/ML, data, or developer-facing products.
3+ years of direct experience with AI/ML, generative AI, agentic systems, data products, intelligent automation, or related technologies.
Proven ability to define and execute product strategy for complex technical platforms used by multiple teams.
Strong understanding of modern AI product concepts, including LLMs, RAG, agents, evaluation, observability, safety, model performance, and human-in-the-loop workflows.
Experience leading product managers or cross-functional product teams.
Ability to operate in ambiguous environments, create structure, and drive alignment across senior stakeholders.
Strong technical fluency and ability to collaborate deeply with engineering, architecture, data science, security, and compliance teams.
Excellent communication skills for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Experience building products in regulated, high-trust, or mission-critical environments.
Healthcare technology experience is strongly preferred, but not required.
Preferred Experience
Experience building AI platforms, agent platforms, ML platforms, developer platforms, workflow automation platforms, or shared product foundations.
Experience with enterprise-scale SaaS platforms and multi-product ecosystems.
Familiarity with healthcare workflows, EHRs, revenue cycle, clinical documentation, patient engagement, or healthcare operations.
Experience defining responsible AI practices, AI governance models, evaluation frameworks, or safety controls.
Experience with third-party model providers, internal model teams, or hybrid AI architectures.
Track record of turning emerging technologies into scalable product capabilities with measurable outcomes.
