The Role:

ElevateBio is seeking a Director of Environmental Health and Safety to join our team.  This senior leadership role will be responsible for developing and executing ElevateBio’s global EHS strategy, building upon existing programs to ensure strong EHS management practices, and drive compliance, risk management, and sustainability efforts.  The successful candidate will demonstrate strong partnership skills, working closely with business stakeholders and executive leadership to embed EHS into business operations and foster a proactive safety culture.  This position reports directly to the SVP, Central Engineering Services.

Here’s What You’ll Do:

  • Strategy & Leadership: Develop and execute a global EHS and sustainability vision, strategy, and roadmap that supports ElevateBio’s business and operational objectives, influencing senior leadership through clear, data-driven insights and measurable KPIs.
  • Business Partnership: Serve as advisor and subject matter expert (SME) to senior leadership on all EHS related matters.  Partner with site leadership teams to understand specific site risks and needs, developing action plans to address them. 
  • Compliance and Program Management: Maintain existing ISO14001 and ISO45001 certifications and expand to future manufacturing sites.  Continuously evolve the EHS management program by incorporating leading industry practices. Ensure adherence to all local, state, and federal EHS regulations (including OSHA, EPA, and NFPA).
  • Risk Management: Develop, oversee, and/or improve programs for occupational safety, industrial hygiene, environmental compliance, sustainability, and emergency preparedness.
  • Incident Command: Establish and coordinate a comprehensive enterprise crisis management and business continuity program aligned with NFPA 1600.  Partner with site leadership teams and IT to develop site specific recovery plans.  Serve as incident commander during emergency response and recovery efforts.
  • Management Oversight: Lead and mentor a team of EHS professionals and contract support with direct management responsibility for EHS operations and performance at all ElevateBio sites in Waltham, MA, Pittsburgh, PA, and Durham, NC.
  • Industry Leadership & External Influence: Monitor emerging EHS and sustainability trends, regulations, and industry best practices to ensure ElevateBio remains ahead of evolving standards.  Represent the company in external forums, benchmarking groups, and regulatory or industry networks to influence and shape EHS practices across the biotech and manufacturing landscapes.
  • Metrics & Budget: Establish and track EHS KPIs, analyze incident reporting data, manage the EHS budget, and allocate resources effectively.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in environmental science, occupational safety, engineering, or a related field.
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or other relevant certifications preferred.
  • 12+ years of experience in EHS management roles with demonstrated leadership skills, including at least 5 years in a senior management role within a biopharmaceutical manufacturing organization.
  • Strong understanding of environmental and safety regulations at the federal, state, and local levels.
  • Excellent communication, analytical, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Proven track record of successfully managing EHS programs and driving continuous improvement.

The budgeted range for this position is $210,000 - $240,000. This range is a good faith estimate of the expected salary range for this position, based on a wide range of factors including qualifications, experience and training, operational and business needs and other considerations permitted by law.
