We deliver solutions that help our nation and allies defend freedoms and deter aggression, creating a safer, more secure world. Join us and help shape the future of aerospace and defense.

The Raytheon Orchestration and Container Kubernetes Service (ROCKS) team builds the automation products and Kubernetes-based platform that classified program teams across Raytheon use to deploy and manage infrastructure and applications in closed-area environments. As an Automation Engineer, you will engage with System Administrators and DevOps teams across Raytheon programs as our internal program teams leverage automation and platform products to start and accelerate their automation and containerization journeys.

This role works primarily with classified program teams in Raytheon’s closed areas, partnering with System Administrators to assess operational goals and prepare for adoption of products from the ROCKS portfolio. Working closely with the ROCKS Automation and Platform team pillars, you will provide recommendations and knowledge transfer throughout each program’s adoption journey—supporting System Administrators as they deploy and scale Infrastructure-as-Code and Kubernetes-based solutions—and provide ongoing support to align roadmaps to optimize their operations and maintenance.

You will coordinate with application engineering teams to help ensure application deployments and lifecycle management stay consistent with ROCKS standards, so classified program environments can take full advantage of ROCKS automation — managing more applications, applying upgrades on schedule, and reducing operational risk.

You’ll bring a mix of hands-on automation engineering and consultative skill, helping shape platform standards while working alongside internal teams as a technical partner throughout their adoption of containers and automation best practices.

What You Will Do

  • Partnering with classified program and closed-area teams to assess operational goals and prepare for adoption of ROCKS automation and Kubernetes platform products.
  • Providing tailored knowledge transfer to System Administrators throughout the adoption journey, covering deployment and scaling of Infrastructure-as-Code, observability, and Kubernetes-based solutions.
  • Supporting deployment, provisioning, and ongoing operations and maintenance for closed-area teams as they adopt and scale ROCKS products.
  • Collaborating with the ROCKS Automation and Platform team pillars, and coordinating with application engineering teams as needed, to keep application deployment and lifecycle management consistent with ROCKS standards.
  • Integrating automation with enterprise tools, APIs, and cloud environments to enhance provisioning processes and security posture.
  • Implementing security hardening and compliance automation to ensure adherence to recommended benchmarks.
  • Optimizing automation workflows by troubleshooting issues, enhancing efficiency, and ensuring high availability.

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a University Degree or equivalent experience and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience, or An Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years' experience
  • Experience partnering with technical IT teams, such as System Administrators, to integrate automation into OS hardening, application, service provisioning workflows.
  • Experience with Ansible open-source IT automation tool used to manage configurations, deploy applications, orchestrate workflows, and provision infrastructure across on-premises and cloud environments
  • Experience with Windows and Linux Operating Systems
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required. U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Experience with API integration and automation.
  • Experience with Ansible and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) principles and best practices
  • Understanding of Ansible architecture including playbooks, roles, collections, inventories, and vault
  • Ability to communicate complex automation approaches effectively to support team adoption and process improvements.
  • Experience with Ansible execution environments and containerized automation.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot complex automation issues
  • Experience deploying new cloud-native platforms and systems in classified and/or unclassified work environments.
  • Understanding of GitOps and package management technologies for Kubernetes cluster management and operations, such as ArgoCD, Packer, Helm, and Kustomize.
  • Experience working with VMware or HPE Morpheus
  • Understanding of network security concepts and automated enforcement of security controls.
