It’s not simply innovative technology that keeps local Boston techies motivated.

For instance, ProfitWell Product Advocate Alissa Chan said the company’s focus on autonomy and initiative has kept her a part of the team for so long.

But Chan isn’t the only local techie with so much pride in her work. Each of the city’s growing tech companies boasts talented, motivated individuals ready to tackle their career goals and continue driving their organizations forward.

Built In Boston rounded up 10 local tech companies to give you a glimpse of their growth plans and unique workplace cultures.

Jamie Harisiades
Product Manager • PathAI

What they do: PathAI’s technology is designed to help pathologists diagnose and treat diseases.

What was the deciding factor for you when you accepted your job at your current company?

I was inspired by PathAI’s mission statement and the opportunity to improve patient outcomes with AI-powered technology. We think about pathology as being the ground truth in medicine, and the opportunity for impact here — in diagnosis, in drug development and ultimately on patients and their families — is truly incredible. As I went through the interview process, I was struck by how passionately my future colleagues spoke about the work they were doing. Their dedication and drive were so palpable and the prospect of joining this team was truly exciting.

Just as I had hoped, this passion was not a facade slapped on during the interview process. It was entirely authentic, and I see my colleagues working incredibly hard every day to move the needle toward our goal of improving patient outcomes.

What excites you most about where your company is headed or the work you’ll do to help your company get there?

As the product manager for the PathAI clinical trial services platform, my job is to think about how we can continue to build our product out in a scalable, flexible and highly-configurable way to support a number of use cases and meet the needs of our partners. I am excited to work alongside my team, which is made up of brilliant people in machine learning, clinical ops, scientific programs, product, engineering and design, to expand our offerings over the course of the coming months and years. Our goals in this area are to improve operational efficiencies and diagnostic accuracy and make personalized medicine scalable for our partners.

Allissa Chan
Product Advocate • Paddle

What they do: ProfitWell offers revenue reporting and analytics services to subscription-based companies.

What has been the biggest reason you’ve stayed at your company so long?

In a relatively short amount of time at ProfitWell, I have been given numerous opportunities for personal and professional growth. I started out creating content and designing events on the marketing team. Two years into the role, I decided I wanted to pivot to product management. At that point, I had spent so much time advertising our products that I became increasingly interested in building and developing them. ProfitWell went above and beyond to support me throughout this transition. In just six months, I was fully settled into my new product role and was making decisions that had a significant impact on our products and customers’ experiences.

I love how ProfitWell really values autonomy and initiative. I have always been encouraged to take on projects that are exciting and important to me and I have learned so much so quickly as a result. My close relationships with our customers, as well as our internal engineering, design and sales teams, affords me a uniquely well-rounded approach to building great products.

What excites you most about where your company is headed or the work you’ll do to help your company get there?

There are so many new and exciting things coming to ProfitWell. Historically, our product Retain has solely been focused on addressing involuntary churn. We leverage our data from more than 20,000 companies to systematically recover failed subscription payments.

In 2020, we started ramping up our efforts to address all kinds of customer churn, both voluntary and involuntary. We are now able to help companies get the greatest possible value out of their customers by leveraging engagement data and likelihood-to-churn scores. We can predict which customers are more likely to upgrade to longer plan lengths or which customers are more likely to need a bit more time on their free trials to convert. We can salvage customers before they cancel and win them back if they do. Best of all, we can do all of this without requiring any effort from their customer service teams. Seeing how well these new Retain features have been performing has been incredibly rewarding.

Nithya Sankaranarayanan
Quality Engineering Manager • Abacus Insights

What they do: Abacus Insights’ data management platform enables healthcare companies to unlock the value of their data.

What has been the biggest reason you’ve stayed at your company so long?

Since I joined Abacus Insights almost three years ago, every day is challenging and never the same — in a good way. I collaborate with brilliant teammates and lead interesting projects that contribute to our important mission. It brings me immense satisfaction knowing we’re working toward something that will better the healthcare system in the U.S. and ultimately give back to our society.

I feel greatly satisfied in my day-to-day work, as I know I’m bringing a critical tool to the healthcare industry.”

What excites you most about where your company is headed or the work you’ll do to help your company get there?

Abacus Insights is seeing a massive increase in demand specifically because of the government interoperability mandate implemented to improve health information access for patients, providers and payers. We’re developing an innovative healthcare data solution that will ultimately improve the lives of many Americans. I feel greatly satisfied in my day-to-day work, as I know I’m bringing a critical tool to the healthcare industry. As a small but fast-growing company, Abacus Insights offers excellent potential for professional advancement and personal growth.

Scott Adelberg
Recruiter • Percy

What they do: Percy is a recruiting firm that helps companies manage high-volume hiring.

What was the deciding factor for you when you accepted your job at your current company?

I decided to work at Percy for the opportunity to help grow something from the ground up. From the first time I spoke with the team, I knew Percy wasn’t your ordinary recruiting company. Everyone was passionate about the work being done and the team atmosphere was positive. I felt it was a unique opportunity to work with innovative and proprietary technology as well as with a team that was dedicated to helping each other thrive and every bit of that has come true.

What excites me going forward is knowing that there are so many other industries we can make a similar impact on.”

What excites you most about where your company is headed or the work you’ll do to help your company get there?

Percy’s future is bright. In 2020, we were able to double our revenue by helping our partners in the red-hot mortgage industry grow their businesses with top talent. While this required a lot of learning and strategic decisions, it has been so rewarding to hear from candidates I’ve placed about how much they've enjoyed working with Percy. What excites me going forward is knowing that there are so many other industries we can make a similar impact on. No matter the industry, I am positive that Percy will be able to strengthen our roots in mortgages and grow our footprint in other areas to provide value to candidates and clients alike. It certainly makes every day feel like a whole new adventure.

Willis Pollard
Senior Business Development Representative • Acquia

What they do: Acquia builds Drupal-based products for enterprise companies.

What was the deciding factor for you when you accepted your job at your current company?

I joined Acquia because of people’s high praise and its reputation for being a great place to work in Boston. I knew from the beginning that I wanted to be surrounded by intelligent, driven people who care about making an impact. As I saw more of the company and my future team through the interview process, I knew Acquia was the place to be. Truly, the people at Acquia have been everything from day one.

What excites you most about where your company is headed or the work you’ll do to help your company get there?

Coming up on a year and a half as a business development representative at Acquia, I have witnessed the rapid growth we’ve experienced first hand. In my short time here, we have acquired several companies, filled out our digital experience platforms offerings and have steeply climbed the analyst rankings for our industry.

Acquia’s vision is coming together and we’re quickly becoming a leader within the digital experience (DXP) space. Considering this is my first job in tech, I can say the ride thus far has been nothing short of spectacular and I’m excited to continue helping drive our growth.

Cara Murphy
Senior Engineer • STR

What they do: Systems & Technology Research delivers technology solutions to a wide range of organizations, including those in defense, intelligence and homeland security.

What has been the biggest reason you’ve stayed at your company so long?

Systems & Technology Research is an extremely agile company with genuinely savvy and considerate people at its core. Consisting of a diverse set of engineers with various backgrounds, STR is able to adapt to our customers’ needs and interests and pursue new research areas, which has helped us grow rapidly. The CEO and other managers have done an excellent job building up the business operations team to support the growth of the engineering team. This allows technical staff members like me to take advantage of new opportunities.

There is a big focus on transparency and communication as well as providing employees with the resources and support needed to achieve their career goals. For example, I am pursuing my Ph.D. part-time while working at STR, and my managers and team leads have all allowed me to have a more flexible schedule, encouraged me to take advantage of STR resources in support of my thesis research and offered up their own time to discuss ideas. I cannot imagine having the same amount of success in both my career and education if I worked elsewhere.

I cannot imagine having the same amount of success in both my career and education if I worked elsewhere.”

What excites you most about where your company is headed or the work you’ll do to help your company get there?

Being a female engineer, I have always been passionate about promoting diversity in STEM fields. Earlier on in my career, I assumed any efforts to this end would be done on my own time through volunteering. Instead, I have found that STR is very proactive in terms of diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) efforts. In recent years, STR has assembled an internal DEI committee that is responsible for setting company goals related to DEI, evaluating progress to such goals and identifying any areas for improvement. I am proud to work at a company that recognizes the value and importance of DEI. Looking to the future, I want to become more involved in these efforts at STR to help work towards an environment where everyone feels included and given the opportunity to excel.

Geovanie Marquez
Director of Engineering • Arcadia

What they do: Arcadia allows healthcare organizations to aggregate, analyze and act on their data.

What was the deciding factor for you when you accepted your job at your current company?

During my interview, I was interested in understanding two things: their engineering philosophy regarding software development and their strategy to stay top in their field according to KLAS, which rates healthcare IT organizations. During the interview, I found out that Arcadia was recognized as the population health leader for the third year in a row. This gave me confidence that there was a working strategy put into outperforming and leading the market. I also wanted to understand if the concepts behind continuous integration/continuous delivery, DevOps, build-run teams and cloud architecture aligned with my own values based on the industry influences provided by books like The DevOps Handbook, Accelerate and Continuous Delivery. The team shares these same aspirations and being a part of that transformation is what drove my conviction to be among their ranks.

What excites you most about where your company is headed or the work you’ll do to help your company get there?

For me, it’s the transformation. I’ve worked in startups and massive bureaucracies. The pace of a small company dominating a cacophonous market intrigues the curious mind. There is excitement in building intrinsically motivated teams who have autonomy, mastery, purpose and a level of rigor and grit in software development that inspires peers and influences the industry. Motivated teams with cloud architectures that make use of serverless technology, combined with distributed systems that provide the scale required to manage the U.S. healthcare population, give us a true technical challenge.

I’m committed to building a high-performing technology company that engineers are proud of and that delights our customers in ways few in healthcare have seen. I know that I’m working with a team and company that seeks to evolve healthcare from pay-per-procedure to pay-for-healthcare-outcomes.

Emily Beliveau
Senior Manager of Business Operations • Uplight

What they do: Uplight provides software and services to utility providers to offer personalized energy services to their customers.

What has been the biggest reason you’ve stayed at your company so long?

I have been with Uplight for over five years and I have seen mobility in my career that has kept me engaged, growing and learning. I like to think of myself as a utility infielder. I have worked in four departments and have grown in skills and business acumen in each role. I am now using these experiences to improve how we get work done so that we can meet our goals, scale our business and provide satisfying, fulfilling jobs for our employees.

As a mom, I have never felt pushed onto a mommy track. In fact, the opposite happened and I was promoted less than a year after my daughter was born. Uplight provides us with 12 weeks of paid maternity leave, great medical and dental benefits, and flexible working hours so that I can be present for my child’s doctor visits and school events. Having the space to grow within my career and be present for my family has been the key to my longevity at Uplight.

Having the space to grow within my career and be present for my family has been the key to my longevity at Uplight.”

What excites you most about where your company is headed or the work you’ll do to help your company get there?

Uplight makes software for hundreds of millions of utility customers to help them engage with their energy usage, make smart energy decisions and spark individual action. I am excited for the work Uplight is doing to create a more sustainable future using business for good. We have big goals. The amount of metric tons of carbon we hope to abate is equivalent to the goals of some countries within the Paris Climate Agreement. We have an equally ambitious goal of driving sustainable solutions for all — not just the privileged. The Uplight team is fighting against climate change, which is one of the biggest threats of our time. Policy is an important strategy in fighting global climate change but it can only go so far.

I believe that millions of little actions can catalyze big changes and the “people side” of the climate change equation has always been a passion of mine. How do we motivate people to make a change? How do we ensure the benefit of our work reaches all communities? Uplight asks these questions daily and works diligently to answer them.

Isabella Melton
Sales Development Rep • Reveneer

What they do: Reveneer is a sales enablement services company that helps organizations build inside sales operations.

What was the deciding factor for you when you accepted your job at your current company?

After I graduated college, I took about a year off to reflect on my next step. I didn’t want to rush into the first company I talked to. It was extremely important to me to take my time and find a place that would allow me to grow, adapt and provide multiple opportunities. Reveneer won me over during the interview process and everyone was so invested in getting to know me as I joined the team. Training set me up for success right off the bat, and after about a year in, I’m eager to see where my Reveneer journey and sales career take me.

Reveneer builds a stronger team every day by continuously investing in the growth and development of its employees.”

What excites you most about where your company is headed or the work you’ll do to help your company get there?

Reveneer builds a stronger team every day by continuously investing in the growth and development of its employees. Our culture thrives on collaboration and new ideas are always encouraged so every voice matters. As our customer base and team expands, so does our data, insights and unique perspective on sales. My input on how to deliver results to our customers is valued and I’m proud to play a direct role in Reveneer’s success and growth.

Emma Larson
Account Executive • LogRocket

What they do: LogRocket’s front-end monitoring solution lets engineering and product teams fix issues faster by helping companies reproduce bugs their users might be experiencing.

What has been the biggest reason you’ve stayed at your company so long?

When I started at LogRocket fresh out of college, I didn’t know what to expect out of a company or out of myself. The biggest reason I stay is that every week I tell my manager, “I am learning so much.” There is so much opportunity for growth on the sales team at LogRocket, whether it be personal growth inspired by the people around me or professional growth where I am always feeling one level out of my comfort zone.

What excites you most about where your company is headed or the work you’ll do to help your company get there?

I am very tempted to talk about product features for this question, but what I am most excited about is getting more people from diverse backgrounds on the sales team. Leading a group for women on the LogRocket sales team has shown me the importance of having both people like you and people who are different from you on the same team.
