Aiven, a cloud data platform provider that aims to democratize access to open source technologies, announced Wednesday it raised $40 million in Series B funding.

The round was led by Silicon Valley-based IVP, a firm that's also invested in high-profile companies like Slack, GitHub and Dropbox.

Aiven provides fully hosted and managed databases and messaging services on all major cloud providers, including Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform and Microsoft Azure. The company claims to serve more than 500 organizations worldwide, including Comcast and Toyota.

This $40 million follows a big year for both Aiven and enterprise software companies in general, which raised more than $30 billion in venture capital funding in 2019. Aiven claims it tripled its revenue run rate, added 200 new customers, doubled its headcount and opened two new offices in Berlin and Sydney last year. The company is headquartered in Helsinki but also has an office in Boston.

This most recent funding means Aiven can grow its presence in the U.S. and provide new cloud services for customers on its platform.

“This investment is evidence of a growing appetite from enterprises for open source data technologies,” co-founder and CEO Oskari Saarenmaa said in a statement. “Aiven is able to close that gap by offering a platform that abstracts away all the complexities of operating those technologies so our customers can focus on their business applications and driving the bottom-line."
