Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Vice President of Human Resources to lead and execute the company’s HR strategy while overseeing day-to-day HR operations across a geographically dispersed workforce. This role requires a hands-on, business-minded HR leader with strong expertise in employee relations, compliance, performance management, benefits administration, policy development, organizational development, and workforce planning. The ideal candidate will partner with executive leadership while providing direct HR support to branch operations across multiple locations. This individual will help build scalable HR processes, support organizational growth, and drive employee engagement, accountability, and operational excellence.

Travel Required: 50–70% (Northeast and Upper Midwest branch locations)

Key Responsibilities

Strategic HR Leadership

  • Develop and execute HR strategies aligned with business growth and operational objectives.

  • Advise executive leadership on workforce planning, organizational structure, employee relations, compliance, and workplace culture.

  • Build scalable HR processes, systems, and policies for a growing, multi-location workforce.

  • Identify talent gaps, succession planning needs, and organizational development opportunities.

  • Support company-wide initiatives related to culture, retention, safety, accountability, and performance.

HR Generalist Operations

  • Oversee onboarding, offboarding, employee records, benefits coordination, leave management, and HR communications.

  • Manage employee relations matters with professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment.

  • Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws, including wage and hour requirements, leave laws, workplace investigations, and documentation.

  • Develop, update, and implement employee handbooks, HR policies, SOPs, forms, and internal procedures.

  • Partner with managers on performance concerns, disciplinary actions, coaching plans, and terminations.

  • Maintain accurate HR documentation and consistent practices across all branches and departments.

Acquisitions and Integration

  • Develop and execute HR integration plans for acquired companies.

  • Coordinate employee onboarding into company systems, policy alignment, benefits transitions, and standardization of HR practices.

  • Partner with executive leadership, legal, finance, payroll, and operations to ensure smooth employee transitions.

  • Identify employee concerns, retention risks, communication needs, and cultural integration challenges.

  • Maintain operational continuity while aligning acquired teams with company standards and values.

Culture, Communication, and Employee Engagement

  • Champion a positive, professional, safety-focused, and values-driven workplace culture.

  • Support initiatives that improve employee satisfaction, communication, recognition, and retention.

  • Develop clear HR communications regarding policy changes, organizational updates, benefits, and employee programs.

  • Serve as a visible and approachable HR leader who builds trust across all levels of the organization.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Development, or a related field.

  • 7+ years of progressive HR experience, with strong generalist expertise across multiple HR disciplines.

  • Prior experience in a leadership-level HR role.

  • Experience supporting large, field-based workforces and multi-location organizations.

  • Demonstrated experience in employee relations, performance management, policy development, compliance, recruiting, onboarding, and HR administration.

  • Ability to operate strategically while remaining hands-on with day-to-day HR activities.

  • Strong communication, judgment, discretion, and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to build trust and collaborate effectively with executives, managers, and employees.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting mergers, acquisitions, or post-acquisition employee integration.

  • Experience in service, construction, trades, facilities, distribution, manufacturing, or other field-based industries.

  • SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, PHR, or SPHR certification.

  • Experience with HRIS, payroll, benefits platforms, applicant tracking systems, and performance management tools.

  • Experience building HR processes within a growing or privately held company.
