As a Life Underwriting Innovation Lead, you'll join a dynamic environment supporting the Office of the Corporate Chief Underwriter (OCCU). In this role, you'll dive into a variety of exciting projects and research initiatives within the Operations Expense, Analytics, and Governance Organization. Your work will be diverse and impactful, including supporting protective value (PV) studies; participating in RFPs for different vendors and vendor evaluation; examining and identifying new data sources for research and insights; improving workflows and working on ways to increase automation; providing input on predictive modeling; and revising underwriting rules and procedures. The Underwriting Innovation Lead will drive projects and initiatives across the policy/rules arm of the OCCU team as well as on the innovation arm of the OCCU, bridging gaps and enabling success, by partnering within the team as well as cross-functionally.
You'll join a collaborative and forward-thinking team of underwriters from various backgrounds and product expertise, who are motivated to shape the underwriting landscape at MassMutual. As a team, we demonstrate accountability, agility, a dedication to being inclusive, a strong business acumen, and show courage and professionalism when advocating for a particular project or presenting a healthy challenge to the status quo. Outside of the Underwriting Governance team, you can expect to work with colleagues from Data Science, Actuarial, Product, Competitive Intelligence, and IT.
As the Underwriting Innovation Lead, you will:

  • Coordinate team members for maximal impact on projects.
  • Partner with leadership across the enterprise to champion changes that improve processes, while maintaining mortality expectations
  • Develop the plan and method for other SMEs on the team to shape data sources for data-driven underwriting practices
  • Lead the analysis and provide recommendations around new technologies and methodologies for risk selection, with an emphasis on driving automation and process efficiency
  • Influence and drive our EHR strategy forward, coordinating with Underwriting production teams, vendor management, field partners and IT
  • Analyze, create, and develop rules for our algorithmic and accelerated underwriting (fluidless) processes
  • Develop the roadmap for new and competitive underwriting guidelines with research, documentation, marketing, and presentations


Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 15+ years of relevant work experience in Life Underwriting
  • Experience working on rules engines, EHR strategy, business rules for predictive models
  • Experience working on protective value studies for underwriting requirements


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Confident communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Experience developing content and presenting to executive leadership team
  • Ability to develop strategy plan and execution plan
  • Ability to partner effectively with internal teams and external partners
