Leads the roadmap and execution of manufacturing tooling for robot production. Translates complex manufacturing processes into software-enabled tools, collaborates with manufacturing and technical leadership, influences technicians and cross-functional builders, and ensures tools are adopted. Success is measured through improved build quality and punctuality. The role also coordinates with builders across customer support and go-to-market domains. Experience with operator-facing software tools, robotics, electromechanical manufacturing, or automation is preferred.

About Tutor

We believe robots are the biggest lever we have to making the physical world a better, more affordable place. But robots are a rounding error in our society: nearly nine out of ten American factories and warehouses don’t even have a single robot, and robots have yet to make their way into our homes or places of business.

Tutor Intelligence is changing that.

Tutor is a robotics research and deployment company, building generally capable robot hardware and artificial intelligence to enable robots to go where no robots have gone before. Sonny is a semi-humanoid robot with frontier dexterity approaching the human form. Cassie does back-breaking work, moving boxes, pallets, and bulk goods for businesses from family-owned manufacturers to some of the largest brands in the world. Tutor robots are manufactured at scale and operate as a network, combining the whole fleet’s learned experience to train ever more capable robot artificial intelligence.

Founded at MIT and headquartered in Watertown, MA, our team is full stack: we design and manufacture robot hardware, train our own models, work directly with the smallest and largest end-customers, and maintain our fleet across the United States. We’re a team of researchers, engineers, technicians, operators, and sellers who love building things and solving hard problems.

Our mission is grand: robots everywhere, for the common good, raising the standard of living across North America, and then the world.

Why Tutor?

Whether you’re designing robots, closing deals, running deployments, or creating the processes that help us scale, your work doesn’t sit on a shelf. It shows up on real production floors, making physical work safer and more affordable.

Our team of 160+ is driven by curiosity and a genuine love of building. Everyone here takes real ownership, learns fast, and holds a high bar while having each other’s backs. If you love hard problems and creating things that didn’t exist before, you’ll fit right in.

Why this role exists

At Tutor, we believe that we must innovate across the entire business to deliver on our mission. This means we’re constantly rethinking how we develop, sell, manufacture, deploy, and support our rapidly-growing fleet. As a member of our technical staff, you’ll rethink how we manufacture robots with process and software.

You will work closely with our manufacturing engineering leadership to determine the process you will codify. They will have opinions, and you must be willing to push back to find the right ideas to build on. You will build the tools with the support of production engineering and a centralized builder cohort, and you are responsible for building tools that get used. The floor will work differently month over month because of what you build, and your success will show up in build quality and punctuality.

What you’ll do

  • Work in between manufacturing leadership and the tech lead of Tutor’s wider system development to determine how we build robots today in the context of the wider organization
  • Earn the trust of the entire manufacturing staff—you are building as much for the technicians assembling the robots as for the leadership planning the roadmap
  • Generate a roadmap for manufacturing tooling and orchestrate its execution; you will be a builder and lead builders across the manufacturing organization
  • Align your roadmap and execution with a cohort of like-missioned builders in other domains (e.g., customer support, GTM) to exchange ideas and ensure your tools and processes dovetail with what others are building

What you’ll bring

  • The ability to map a complex operational process clearly and quickly. We’ll provide the markers
  • Experience influencing teams you don’t formally manage. A tool is only as powerful as its users
  • Humility. You will be building a lot of tooling for a large organization, and great ideas on paper don’t always translate into practice. You bring an understanding that you are working to build the best product, not your own best ideas.

Nice to haves

  • Experience building software tools that operators used every day.
  • Experience in robotics, electromechanical manufacturing, or automation

Benefits

We take care of our team so they can do their best work. At Tutor, you’ll get:

  • Fully employer-covered health insurance, so you’re protected without the premium.
  • A managed 401(k) to help you plan for the future.
  • Generous time off: unlimited PTO and all federal holidays off for full-time salaried employees, and 16+ days of accrued paid time off plus 1.5x pay on federal holidays for hourly employees.
  • Regular in-office meals and team social events throughout the year.

As Tutor grows, so will our benefits. We’re continuing to invest in ways to support our team at work and beyond.

Tutor Intelligence is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applicants from all backgrounds.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
