Lead architecture and implementation of Levo's core systems: voice AI agents, agentic workflows, matching intelligence, routing, survey pipelines, and analytics. Set technical direction for backend, data models, AI design, deployments, security (SOC 2/HIPAA), and production AI practices. Ship high-leverage systems, mentor engineers, partner with the CEO on roadmap and hiring, and improve developer experience, observability, and reliability for clinical workflows.

Why This Role

Levo helps healthcare providers recruit and retain frontline talent: nurses, caregivers, clinicians, and more.

We're building the system of action for healthcare employment, a platform that helps providers recruit faster, retain better, and predict staffing risks before they happen. Voice AI and agentic workflows sit at the core of how we do it: agents that talk to clinicians, triage signal, and take action so humans can focus on judgment, not repetition.

We're looking for a Staff Software Engineer to help architect and lead that work. You'll set technical direction across our most important systems, partner with the CEO on roadmap and hiring, and raise the bar for how every engineer at Levo ships. This is a window to shape the technical foundation of a high-impact Vertical AI company while it's still being defined.

What You'll Own

Technical Direction

  • Architect the systems at the core of Levo: voice AI agents, agentic workflows, escalation routing, candidate-matching intelligence, survey pipelines, and analytics infrastructure.

  • Make foundational calls on backend design, data models, AI architecture, deployment environments, and the standards we hold ourselves to for scalability, security, and data integrity (SOC 2, HIPAA).

  • Decide where we use which models, when we build versus buy, and how our AI systems are evaluated, monitored, and improved over time.

  • Set the bar for production AI: prompts, tools, evals, guardrails, fallbacks, and observability are all part of the product.

Building & Shipping

  • Stay close to the code. Lead the design and implementation of the hardest, most leveraged pieces yourself.

  • Take ambiguous, cross-cutting problems and turn them into systems other engineers can build on.

  • Use AI-assisted tooling (Devin, Copilot, Claude) to move fast and raise the ceiling on what a small team can ship.

Product Leadership

  • Partner with Jason (CEO) on prioritization, roadmap tradeoffs, and the technical strategy behind our biggest bets.

  • Translate customer pain into product architecture. Sit in on customer calls, hear the problem firsthand, and shape what we build next.

  • Own product outcomes that matter: clinician retention, customer adoption, reliability of our AI agents in real clinical workflows.

  • Balance velocity with robustness. Ship fast, but design for the reliability healthcare demands.

Team & Culture

  • Set the technical bar and the cultural tone: how we review code, how we handle outages, how we run experiments, how we disagree and decide.

  • Mentor and grow engineers. Make the engineers around you measurably better.

  • Help us hire. Interview, calibrate, and bring in the next wave of Levo engineers.

  • Invest in developer experience: CI/CD, observability, testing, evals, feedback loops.

Who You Are

  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience, including time at a senior or staff level shipping production systems that real users depend on.

  • Deep experience across our stack, or the judgment to ramp on it fast: React, TypeScript, Python.

  • Hands-on experience building with LLMs and agentic workflows: tool use, function calling, multi-step reasoning, evals, and the messy reality of getting agents to behave in production.

  • Experience with voice AI is a strong plus: real-time speech (STT/TTS), telephony (Twilio, LiveKit, Vapi, Retell, or similar), latency tuning, and conversation design for spoken interactions.

  • A track record of leading without managing: setting direction, raising the bar, and growing the engineers around you.

  • A product thinker who sees engineering as leverage. You reason through tradeoffs and can explain them to customers, executives, and engineers in the same conversation.

  • Energized by ambiguity. You like shaping 0→1 systems and bringing structure where there isn't any yet.

  • Humble enough to learn from customers and teammates, confident enough to lead the design debates and call the shot when it's time.

  • Motivated by impact. Your work directly helps healthcare organizations retain clinicians and improve patient care.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
