TITLE: Staff Engineer, Event-Driven Architecture
LOCATION: New York City (hybrid) or Fully Remote in the United States
SALARY: $180,000 - $220,000 (based on NYC, will be adjusted for geo)
The Role:
We are seeking an experienced and motivated Staff Engineer to transform our event-driven microservices architecture. You'll have a unique opportunity to design and implement foundational architectural components for a large engineering team. As a hands-on leader you will ensure the engineering team can operate with sustainable developer velocity for years to come.
What You'll Do:

  • Be an organizational leader in designing, building, and operating an event-driven microservices architecture, leveraging Kafka as the backbone.
  • Design and implement foundational architectural components and functionality, empowering other engineers to work in flexible, scalable, and maintainable ways.
  • Define clear domain boundaries for each microservice and its domain events, ensuring bounded contexts that lead to autonomous development.
  • Work closely with various engineering teams to identify and mitigate risks, remove roadblocks, and ensure continuous progress towards sustainable high developer velocity.
  • Manage project timelines, deliverables, and resources to ensure successful completion.
  • Build observable systems and demonstrate operational excellence.


What We're Looking For:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in software development, with at least 2 working on event-driven microservices-based architectures.
  • Proven experience in a technical leadership role, efficiently delivering business value using strong communication, collaboration, and project management skills,
  • Ability to hit the ground running on projects that involve Kafka, Python, Typescript, PHP/Laravel, Postgres, Snowflake, Airflow, Redis, Datadog, Feature Flags, Github Actions, Docker, Terraform, and AWS.
  • Willingness to work with and improve code you did not originally write.
  • Effective at working with ambiguous or missing information and adapting quickly in a startup-like environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with a passion for getting involved in both technical details and high-level strategy, anticipating team needs and solving them ahead of time.


Preferred:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • A curious explorer who keeps up to date with latest technical developments and has a good knowledge of how to build high performance engineering teams.
  • You've read all the standard best practice engineering books as well as "Designing Data-Intensive Applications" and "Designing Event-Driven Systems".
  • A leader who promotes a culture of curiosity, inclusion, and humility.
