About us:
Foodsmart is the leading telenutrition and foodcare solution, backed by a robust network of Registered Dietitians. Our platform is designed to foster healthier food choices, drive lasting behavior change, and deliver long-term health outcomes. Through our highly personalized, digital platform, we guide our 2.2 million members—including those in employer-sponsored health plans, regional and national Medicaid managed care organizations, Medicare Advantage plans, and commercial insurers—on a tailored journey to eating well while saving time and money.

Foodsmart seamlessly integrates dietary assessments and nutrition counseling with online food ordering and cost-effective meal planning for the entire family, optimizing ingredients both at home and on the go. We partner with national and regional retailers across the U.S., many of whom accept SNAP/EBT, making healthier food more accessible. Additionally, we assist members with SNAP enrollment and management, providing tangible access to nutritious food. In 2024, Foodsmart secured a $200 million investment from TPG’s Rise Fund, which supports entrepreneurs dedicated to achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. This investment will help us expand our reach, particularly to low-income workers who are disproportionately affected by diet-related diseases.

About the role:
We are seeking a Staff Data Scientist to solve one of the most critical challenges at our company: balancing our marketplace of Registered Dietitian capacity (Supply) and patient appointments (Demand). This is a foundational, high-impact role reporting to the VP of Analytics & Data Science, with a unique opportunity to build the data products that directly influence our marketing strategy, financial models, operational efficiency, and provider hiring roadmap.

You will have the autonomy to own this domain from the ground up, starting with foundational modeling to provide immediate executive-level visibility, and evolving your work into a fully automated, predictive system in partnership with our Engineering team.

You will:

  • Develop and own the foundational models for our two-sided marketplace, focusing on the interplay of patient demand and RD supply.
  • Build, deploy, and own the company’s core Supply & Demand models, delivering a leadership dashboard to drive decisions on marketing focus and Registered Dietitian (RD) recruiting.
  • Partner with the FP&A team to provide the core models that will be a key input into their revenue and forecasting processes.
  • Utilize techniques like Monte Carlo simulation, time-series forecasting, and mixed-integer programming to model complex scenarios and recommend optimal strategies
  • Develop and own an end-to-end demand forecasting and workforce planning model that integrates marketable lives, marketing conversion dynamics, RD state licensure requirements, and supply constraints to optimize RD staffing and scheduling in line with forecasted demand and business priorities.
  • Collaborate with our engineering partners to productionalize your models, ensuring they are scalable and integrated into our systems.
  • Partner closely with leadership across Marketing, Finance, and Clinical Operations to translate your insights into strategic business decisions.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on marketplace dynamics, effectively communicating complex findings to executive audiences.

You are:

  • An expert in marketplace dynamics, passionate about finding the elegant mathematical representations of complex business operations.
  • A "0-to-1" builder who is comfortable with ambiguity and thrives on creating foundational solutions with the right balance of speed and complexity.
  • A strategic partner who can translate a high-level business problem into a concrete technical roadmap and influence senior leaders.
  • A pragmatic and results-oriented scientist who prioritizes delivering business value quickly and iterating towards a more robust long-term solution.

You have:

  • Bachelor’s degree, ideally in a quantitative or technical field (e.g., Economics, Operations Research, Statistics, Computer Science); Master’s degree is a plus.
  • 8+ years of experience in data science with a proven track record of building models to solve complex marketplace, supply chain, or logistics problems.
  • Expert-level proficiency in Python (pandas, scikit-learn, PuLP, etc.) and SQL.
  • Hands-on experience with dbt for data modeling and BI dashboard development.
  • Understanding of FP&A revenue modeling and strong excel skills
  • Deep expertise in predictive modeling, optimization techniques and measuring the impact of your work.
  • Experience in a strategic data science role, where you have been responsible for, foundational analysis, operational reporting and the development of production models.
  • Experience partnering with engineering to deploy models into production environments (experience with AWS SageMaker is a plus).
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to distill complex models and analyses into clear, actionable recommendations for an executive audience.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
