Sompo has a unique opportunity for a Sr. Claims Counsel, EPL in our US Employment Practices Liability (“EPL) Claims team.

This position handles Employment Practices Liability claims involving Commercial Management Liability and Financial Institutions Insureds and provides legal review and policy drafting support to Underwriting.   The successful candidate will be able to provide insight and analysis on complex high profile/high exposure US EPL claims.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Manage US Employment Practices Liability (EPL) claims, related systems, and processes, while evaluating exposures and making substantive claim decisions across EPL and other business lines.

  • Provide coverage, liability, and damages analysis for EPL claims, with general knowledge of Director and Officer (D&O) liability claims and identify trends/exposures affecting CML or FI portfolios.

  • Support underwriting through legal reviews, policy drafting, and timely reporting of exposures to underwriting and management.

  • Prepare and distribute accurate narrative and arithmetic reports in a timely manner.

  • Collaborate with the Global Claims Team on projects, including attending industry conferences, publishing on claim trends, and assisting other offices with complex claims.

  • Communicate with and support underwriting, functional groups, and management, while handling additional duties and travel as required.

 

What you’ll bring:

  • Law degree required

  • Minimum of 5-8 years’ experience required in primarily EPL claims handling or related litigation with a career history of increasing responsibility

  • Preference will be given if experience was at both a law firm and with an insurance carrier

  • Strong preference for candidate who has pursued or is in the process of pursuing an insurance related designation e.g. RPLU or CPCU

  • Exposure to or direct handling of complex high profile/high exposure management liability claims with an emphasis on evaluating, handling, negotiating, and settling complex matters  

  • Minimal travel as needed for claims mediation

Salary Range: $125,000 – $175,000.  Actual compensation for this role will depend on several factors including the cost of living associated with your work location, your qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.
