The Solutions Engineer will design and implement full-stack solutions, modernize legacy systems, improve engineering practices, and drive team collaboration to achieve KPIs.
Description
Do you have the skills and drive to join a tech team that's working to digitally transform a trillion-dollar industry? From test-driving the latest technologies to creating intuitive consumer apps, Liberty Mutual is constantly innovating and creating industry-leading solutions that provide peace of mind for our customers worldwide.
We're seeking a hands-on Solutions Engineer who excels in modern front-end frameworks and is equally comfortable diving into legacy systems to diagnose, stabilize, and modernize. You will collaborate to deliver end-to-end solutions, influence engineering excellence across squads, and drive measurable improvements aligned to KPIs. This role focuses on technical leadership and blends architecture, and implementation.
What you'll do
Design, build, and integrate full-stack solutions using JavaScript/Typescript/Angular/React, Node, Next.Js, GraphQL, Analyze and modernize legacy applications and services (e.g., monoliths, older frameworks, relational databases), creating pragmatic migration paths and decommission plans.
Break down ambiguous problems, identify root causes in complex systems, and deliver incremental improvements with clear milestones.
Establish and champion engineering excellence practices (code quality, testing, observability, CI/CD, security by default, accessibility) across squads.
Drive engineering outcomes by improving DORA metrics (deployment frequency, lead time, change failure rate, MTTR) and instituting SLOs/SLIs for critical services.
Contribute to objectives by identifying and executing cost optimizations (runtime, pipeline, infra), and quantifying savings.
Collaborate with product, design, platform, security, and data teams to translate business needs into scalable, secure, maintainable solutions.
Create and socialize technical designs, playbooks, and runbooks; lead knowledge-sharing to raise the bar across teams.
Implement robust CI/CD pipelines (e.g., GitHub Actions) with quality gates, automated testing, and secure supply chain practices.
Embed observability (logs, metrics, traces, dashboards, alerts) to enable data-driven decisions and fast incident response.
Uphold security and compliance standards (OWASP, secrets management, least privilege, threat modeling); participate in on-call/incident response as needed.
Qualifications
What you'll bring:
10+ years of professional software engineering experience building production web applications, 3+ years at a Principal or higher engineer position
Proven, hands-on experience with both MERN and MEAN stacks:
Front end: React and Angular; TypeScript/JavaScript; state management; CSS/SCSS; accessibility (WCAG).
Back end: Node.js/Express; RESTful APIs; authentication/authorization; performance tuning.
Datastores: MongoDB (schema design, indexing, performance) and familiarity with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL/MySQL/SQL Server, Mongo DB, Cosmos DB).
Demonstrated success working with and modernizing legacy systems (e.g., Java/.NET monoliths, older front-end frameworks, SOAP/BPM, cron/batch jobs), including refactoring, strangler patterns, and phased decommissioning.
Strong CI/CD experience (GitHub Actions or similar), automated testing (unit, integration, e2e), and infrastructure fundamentals (containers, cloud basics).
Practical observability experience (dashboards, SLIs/SLOs, alerts) and performance diagnostics.
Track record of influencing without authority: elevating standards, improving team practices, and mentoring peers.
Excellent communication skills-clear written designs, concise status updates, and facilitation of inclusive, effective discussions.
Nice to have
Cloud experience AWS and Azure
Identity and access management (MFA; Auth0, Ping or similar).
Data pipelines/streaming basics; caching (Redis); message queues.
Security tooling and practices (SAST/DAST/Software Composition Analysis, supply chain security).
Experience with cost optimization and FinOps practices supporting SCORP-like initiatives.
Experience driving cross-team communities of practice or playbook adoption.
