Position Summary 

Join athenahealth as a Software Engineer, Associate, based in Boston, MA, working in a hybrid environment that blends remote and on-site collaboration. This role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to innovative healthcare technology solutions by leveraging your software engineering skills. You will report directly to the Senior Engineering Manager, playing an important role in advancing our technology initiatives. 

Team Summary  

The Platform team at athenahealth is dedicated to building and maintaining the essential foundational components that empower other development teams across the company to create and enhance their products efficiently. This team not only supports internal development efforts but also delivers select end-user features that impact the broader healthcare ecosystem. Focused on accelerating innovation and delivery, the Platform team prioritizes improving developer productivity, reducing risks during development and production, ensuring reliability and scalability of current product suites, and exploring new revenue opportunities through Platform as a Service offering. By joining this team, you will be part of a dynamic group that drives the technological backbone of athenahealth’s solutions, enabling seamless healthcare experiences for providers and patients alike. 

Essential Job Responsibilities 

  • Design & develop high quality, scalable software solutions and services and deploy timely production fixes.  

  • Create and maintain unit tests while monitoring code quality to identify bugs and vulnerabilities 

  • Build cloud based services engineered to handle extremely high transaction volumes 

  • Optimize integration systems by proactively proposing and implementing improved solutions 

  • Follow coding standards, architectural patterns, and the team’s Definition of Done, including thorough peer reviews.  

  • Use AI powered development tools for faster feature delivery, debugging, refactoring, and efficient multifile/code generation workflows.  

  • Apply AI driven insights to implement complex logic, rapidly prototype, and collaborate effectively on production ready code 

Additional Job Responsibilities 

  • Assist in the evaluation and adoption of emerging technologies relevant to healthcare software development. 

  • Contribute to documentation of software design, architecture, and operational procedures. 

  • Participate in team meetings and provide input on project planning and prioritization. 

  • Support mentoring and knowledge sharing within the team. 

  • Engage in continuous learning to stay current with industry trends and best practices. 

  • Help identify opportunities for process improvements within the development lifecycle. 

Expected Education & Experience 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field. 

  • 2+ years of professional experience in software engineering roles. 

  • Knowledge and expertise in programming languages such as: Java, Spring boot 

  • Knowledge of working with AWS, IaC (Terraform), RESTAPI and SQL development 

  • Familiarity with artificial intelligence (AI) technologies and their application in software solutions. 

  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment. 

  • Excellent communication skills to interact with technical and non-technical stakeholders. 


Expected Compensation

$96,000 - $162,000

The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates.  Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
