Internship
Software engineering intern responsible for owning a scoped project and building production-quality features across frontend, backend, full-stack, real-time, or forward-deployed systems. Duties include developing telemetry and geospatial interfaces, backend services, APIs, event-driven systems, tests, developer tooling, and data pipelines. The intern will support integration and test events, debug distributed systems and networks, explain technical tradeoffs, and present their work at the end of the internship.

Swarm Aero is redefining air power, building the largest swarming UAV and the most versatile swarming aircraft network in the world. The company is moving quickly to launch the first aircraft designed specifically for swarming, as well as the Command & Control software to mobilize swarms of thousands of heterogeneous autonomous assets and empower human operators to achieve superhuman results.

The team has created and exited multiple startups, negotiated defense deals worth billions of dollars, and designed and built 30+ novel aircraft, with aerospace experience from Scaled Composites, Airbus, Archer Aviation, Blue Origin, and Boom Supersonic.

READ THIS PART FIRST

Legion is not a normal web application. It is command and control software that has to present dense real-time information, coordinate distributed systems, and continue being useful when communications are imperfect.

WHAT WE DO

Swarm Aero is redefining air power. We are building autonomous aircraft and Legion, command and control software designed to coordinate large numbers of heterogeneous autonomous systems. Our team combines experience building novel aircraft, scaling startups, and delivering technology for national security.

THE INTERNSHIP

You will own a scoped project with a clear technical or business outcome, work directly with the people responsible for the system, and present what you built and learned at the end of the summer. The goal is not to give you practice work. It is to give you useful work with the support to do it well.

WHAT YOU'LL DO

· Build product features across frontend, backend, full-stack, real-time, or forward-deployed software

· Develop interfaces for telemetry, geospatial data, mission planning, scheduling, collaboration, or system health

· Build and operate backend services, APIs, event-driven systems, or data pipelines

· Write automated tests, improve developer tooling, and help ship production-quality software

· Support integration and test events, debug issues across services and networks, and turn what you learn into product improvements

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

· Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related field, with graduation and enrollment requirements to be confirmed.

· Strong programming fundamentals and experience building a substantial software project

· Experience with a modern frontend framework, backend language, systems language, or full-stack application

· Ability to explain technical tradeoffs, debug methodically, and write maintainable code

WHAT SETS YOU APART

· React, TypeScript, Go, Python, Rust, C++, or similar tools

· Distributed systems, networking, real-time applications, maps, games, simulation, or data visualization

· Linux, Docker, CI/CD, customer-facing engineering, or deployed project experience

WHAT YOU DO NOT NEED

Aerospace experience, a perfect GPA, or a previous internship at a famous company. Show us what you have built, analyzed, tested, organized, or improved, and be ready to explain your contribution clearly.

THE HONEST VERSION

The pace is fast, the problems will not arrive fully defined, and you may spend part of the summer learning why your first approach was wrong. We will expect you to ask questions, test your assumptions, document your work, and leave the project better than you found it.

ITAR requirement

To conform to U.S. Government export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the U.S., protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3), or eligible to obtain the required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State.

Swarm Aero is an equal opportunity employer. We value diverse backgrounds and experiences and make employment decisions without regard to race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, veteran status, or disability.
What We Offer

  • Meaningful equity in a high-growth defense technology company

  • Competitive base salary commensurate with experience

  • Medical, dental, vision, and 401k

  • PTO and paid sick leave

  • Monthly wellness stipend

  • Daily catered lunch (office)

  • Paid parental leave

  • Direct impact on a critical national security mission

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
