Biotechnology is rewriting life as we know it, from the medicines we take, to the crops we grow, the materials we wear, and the household goods that we rely on every day. But moving at the new speed of science requires better technology.
Benchling’s mission is to unlock the power of biotechnology. The world’s most innovative biotech companies use Benchling’s R&D Cloud to power the development of breakthrough products and accelerate time to milestone and market.
Come help us bring modern software to modern science.

Role Overview

Benchling brings best-in-breed infrastructure to the world’s leading biotech companies, and Kubernetes is at the center of it all. We’re looking for an engineer with deep Kubernetes expertise to join our Platform Services team.

This isn’t about just keeping clusters alive — it’s about re-architecting our Kubernetes platform to support the next generation of scientific workflows, AI-driven research, and secure custom code execution at scale.

You’ll have immediate impact by:

  • Driving the effort to simplify and scale our cluster architecture.
  • Leading the re-platforming of Benchling’s largest applications onto Kubernetes.
  • Designing systems that safely run customer-provided code without compromising security or reliability.

At Benchling, every improvement you make to infrastructure directly accelerates discoveries in drug development, agriculture, and materials science. That’s what we call Team Science: engineers, product managers, and scientists solving hard problems together.

Responsibilities
  • Design, scale, and re-architect Kubernetes infrastructure for performance, reliability, and global reach.
Lead the migration of our core monolith to Kubernetes, ensuring security, scalability, and resilience.
  • Build multi-tenant, secure execution environments for untrusted customer code and containers.
  • Develop systems for observability, monitoring, and automated remediation that raise the bar for SRE practices.
Collaborate with colleagues from diverse backgrounds (engineering, product, science) to deliver infrastructure that empowers life science R&D.
  • Share your knowledge generously and help grow the next generation of infra engineers at Benchling.
Qualification
  • Strong Kubernetes expertise — you’ve operated, scaled, and bent clusters to your will.
5+ years of experience as a Site Reliability Engineer, DevOps Engineer, or Infrastructure-focused Software Engineer.
  • Strong coding ability in Python, Go, or Java to build scalable infrastructure services.
Experience with AWS or other major cloud platforms; knowledge of virtualization and microservices architectures.
  • A mindset for secure, multi-tenant, high-availability environments.

Why this role: This is a chance to work at the intersection of Kubernetes scale and scientific discovery. You’ll tackle hard infra problems, partner across teams, and see your work directly accelerate breakthroughs in biotech.

What you need to know about the Boston Tech Scene

Boston is a powerhouse for technology innovation thanks to world-class research universities like MIT and Harvard and a robust pipeline of venture capital investment. Host to the first telephone call and one of the first general-purpose computers ever put into use, Boston is now a hub for biotechnology, robotics and artificial intelligence — though it’s also home to several B2B software giants. So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
