At Medtronic you can begin a life-long career of exploration and innovation, while helping champion healthcare access and equity for all. You’ll lead with purpose, breaking down barriers to innovation in a more connected, compassionate world.

A Day in the LifeAt Medtronic, we bring bold ideas forward with speed and decisiveness to put patients first in everything we do. In-person exchanges are invaluable to our work. We’re working a minimum of 4 days a week onsite as part of our commitment to fostering a culture of professional growth and cross-functional collaboration as we work together to engineer the extraordinary.

As a Software Engineer II – 3D Visualization (OpenGL) you'll  join the team that builds the real-time 3D visualization at the heart of the Prism Mapping system — the rendering of cardiac anatomy, catheter position, and electrical activity that clinicians look at throughout a procedure. As an SWE II, you'll write C++ and Python on Linux, work with OpenGL, VTK, and Qt/QML to extend rendering features, debug shader and mesh issues, and learn how the rendering pipeline fits together with the data pipeline and the UI. Expect to pair regularly with more experienced engineers and dig into how 3D math and GPU pipelines actually work.

About the Affera Prism Mapping System

The Affera Prism Mapping System is an advanced electrophysiology mapping platform used by physicians to diagnose and guide the treatment of cardiac arrhythmias. It captures and processes signals from inside the beating heart, builds detailed real-time three-dimensional maps of cardiac anatomy and electrical activity, and presents that information to clinicians and mapping specialists during live procedures. Engineers on this team build the software that makes that possible — from the runtime and data pipelines that move signals in milliseconds, to the algorithms that turn raw signals into clinically meaningful information, to the visualization and UI surfaces clinicians rely on in the lab.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Implement rendering features in C++ and Python using OpenGL, VTK, and Qt/QML on Linux.

  • Extend shaders, meshes, and rendering passes for cardiac anatomy, catheter position, and electrical activity visualization.

  • Own moderately scoped features or components and deliver end-to-end.

  • Make routine technical decisions within established team guidelines.

  • Contribute to subsystem design discussions and implementation planning.

  • Debug issues across components, with guidance as needed.

  • Participate in code reviews, integration, testing, and technical documentation.

  • Build understanding of broader system interactions and interfaces.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience

  • OR Master’s degree with a minimum of 0 years of relevant experience

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with computer graphics, 3D math, or game/visualization engines.

  • Hands-on experience with OpenGL, WebGL, Vulkan, DirectX, or a comparable rendering API.

  • Strong programming skills, understanding, and knowledge of Python/C++ or equivalent.

  • Ability to contribute in a mixed Python/C++ with Qt/QML environment.

  • Solid foundation in software engineering principles, including object-oriented design, data structures, algorithms, memory management, and version control.

  • Experience developing on Linux-based systems.

  • Exposure to Docker, CI/CD, or container-based development workflows.

  • Familiarity with debugging multi-process, distributed, or device-connected systems.

  • Sound judgment when evaluating the quality and correctness of AI-generated code.

For Baccalaureate degrees earned outside of the United States, a degree that satisfies the requirements of 8 C.F.R. § 214.2(h)(4)(iii)(A) is required.
