Description
The Role
We're looking for an engineering leader who still ships code.
You'll lead multiple teams building the business-critical platforms, integrations, and modernization programs behind how GM sources parts and delivers vehicles. You'll own the technical direction, the delivery, and the results.
You'll also change how GM builds software. You'll make AI coding agents a core part of how your teams plan, build, test, and ship, and you'll prove the impact with real metrics.
You'll stay hands-on: writing and reviewing code, debugging hard problems, prototyping, and working directly with agents. You'll bring Principal Engineer-level judgment to every design review, and you'll lead by example.
About the Team
The Order Fulfillment Software Factory builds GM's end-to-end software for two value streams:
  • Source to Deliver: purchasing, supplier management, supply chain, and logistics
  • Order to Deliver: how GM sells, configures, schedules, and delivers vehicles to dealers and customers

We're driving GM's SaaS First, Cloud First, AI First direction, working alongside Purchasing and Order Fulfillment IT and GM's peer engineering, mainframe, and SAP factories.
What You'll Do
  • Lead multiple engineering teams across a portfolio of modern platforms, APIs, integrations, and legacy systems
  • Turn business strategy into roadmaps and KPIs, then deliver them
  • Partner with product, business, architecture, operations, and delivery leaders to translate business needs into scalable engineering solutions
  • Make the hard architecture calls and set a high bar for quality, security, and reliability
  • Get hands-on through code reviews, debugging, technical spikes, and proofs of concept
  • Drive modernization strategies for legacy applications, including decomposition, platform evolution, integration simplification, and reduction of technical debt
  • Roll out AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code, Copilot, Cursor) across the SDLC, with guardrails that make agent-written code safe to ship
  • Build agent tooling such as MCP servers, custom agents, and agent-driven CI/CD for PR review, test generation, and large-scale migrations
  • Measure what works with DORA metrics, cycle time, and change-failure rate, and report results to leadership
  • Hire and grow engineers and tech leads who are fast, rigorous, and accountable for everything they merge
  • Create a culture of accountability, technical excellence, continuous learning, and customer-focused delivery
  • Own production health by leading incident response and driving root causes to durable fixes

Your Skills and Abilities (Minimum Qualifications)
  • BS in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 10+ years of software engineering and people leadership experience, including leading multiple teams
  • Current, hands-on coding proficiency in Java or C++, plus experience with front-end frameworks such as Angular or React
  • 1+ year of substantial hands-on use of AI coding agents in production work
  • Experience with distributed systems, APIs, event-driven architecture, and cloud platforms (Azure, AWS, or GCP)
  • Experience modernizing legacy systems while supporting business-critical delivery
  • Experience establishing and improving engineering standards, development lifecycle practices, and delivery discipline
  • Ability to lead across ambiguity, influence senior stakeholders, and align technical decisions with business outcomes
  • Strong coaching and mentoring capability, with a track record of raising the technical effectiveness of engineers and managers
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to explain complex technical issues clearly to both engineering and business audiences

What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)
  • 12+ years of software engineering experience and 7+ years in engineering leadership
  • Experience leading org-wide adoption of agentic development, with measured gains
  • Experience building with LLM APIs, MCP, retrieval, and evaluation harnesses
  • Experience with mainframe-connected or deeply integrated enterprise systems
  • Familiarity with secure-by-design practices for AI-generated code and automotive standards (ISO 26262, ISO/SAE 21434)
  • Experience leading globally distributed teams
  • Experience influencing executives in a complex, matrixed organization
