Position Summary

Help shape clinical experiences that make healthcare providers’ work more efficient. We’re looking for a Senior Product Manager who combines strong product judgment with a hands-on, experimental approach, using AI tools, rapid prototyping, and clinician feedback to turn complex problems into meaningful product improvements.

You’ll lead several related encounter and visit workstreams across shared and specialty-specific experiences, including opportunities to use AI to improve workflow efficiency. This individual contributor role combines product strategy and discovery with Scrum Product Owner responsibilities. You’ll partner closely with UX, Engineering, Data Science, and Clinical Informatics to validate ideas, deliver solutions, and measure customer value. This position is based in Boston, MA and reports to the Executive Director, Product Management.

About the Team

The Specialties Zone builds tailored clinical experiences across athenaOne, including AI-native encounter workflows, specialty capabilities, and configurable tools for capturing and acting on clinical information. We collaborate across Product, Engineering, UX, Data Science, Analytics, Clinical Informatics, and Patient Safety to simplify complex workflows for clinicians and practices.

Who You Are

You are a strong product operator who has spent meaningful time in healthcare technology and understands how much complexity is hidden behind every “simple” clinical workflow. You:

  • Have worn multiple hats. You move comfortably between customer discovery, business decisions, prototyping, and delivery.
  • Deliver measurable impact. You have shipped products that improved clinician or practice outcomes and created lasting business value.
  • Build to learn. You test early prototypes with providers, use AI tools to accelerate exploration, and refine your approach based on evidence.
  • Understand the business of healthcare. You connect provider needs, payer dynamics, regulation, and competitive forces to opportunities that create real market value.
  • Dig into the why. You bring curiosity and tenacity to complex problems, challenge assumptions, and find practical ways to answer the hardest questions and move work forward.
  • Communicate clearly. You explain decisions and trade-offs concisely, welcome constructive challenge, and build alignment without direct authority.

Essential Job Responsibilities

  • Own discovery, strategy, and delivery across related workstreams, setting priorities, roadmaps, and measurable objectives.
  • Prototype to learn. Work with UX and Engineering to test ideas with clinicians and resolve key uncertainties before committing significant engineering investment.
  • Serve as Scrum Product Owner: prioritize backlogs, write clear specifications and user stories, and make decisions about scope and sequencing.
  • Make AI tools part of everyday product work, from customer feedback synthesis to prototyping and analysis. Share approaches that help teams learn and deliver faster, with appropriate human review.
  • Resolve dependencies and trade-offs across teams. Lead launches with customer-facing partners, measure adoption and outcomes, and iterate.
  • For AI-enabled clinical features, partner with Engineering, Data Science, Analytics, Clinical Informatics, and Patient Safety to define evaluation criteria for accuracy, bias, data quality, and safety, and establish responsible rollout and monitoring approaches.

Expected Education & Experience

  • 5+ years of product management experience strongly preferred, with a track record of shipping products and measuring customer outcomes.
  • Strong understanding of clinical workflows and healthcare enterprise needs, gained through designing products with and for providers and clinicians, direct clinical practice, or related healthcare experience.
  • Experience as a Product Manager or Product Owner on Agile or Scrum teams, partnering closely with Engineering and UX.
  • Practical experience using AI tools for product discovery, prototyping, or development. Experience shipping AI-enabled clinical products is a plus.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience.

Expected Compensation

$141,000 - $239,000

The base salary range shown reflects the full range for this role from minimum to maximum. At athenahealth, base pay depends on multiple factors, including job-related experience, relevant knowledge and skills, how your qualifications compare to others in similar roles, and geographical market rates.  Base pay is only one part of our competitive Total Rewards package - depending on role eligibility, we offer both short and long-term incentives by way of an annual discretionary bonus plan, variable compensation plan, and equity plans.
