Powered by two trusted, global brands, Shark and Ninja, the company has a proven track record of bringing disruptive innovation to market, and developing one consumer product after another has allowed SharkNinja to enter multiple product categories, driving significant growth and market share gains. Headquartered in Needham, Massachusetts with more than 3,600+ associates, the company's products are sold at key retailers, online and offline, and through distributors around the world.
The Haircare NPD team at SharkNinja is seeking a Senior Product Design Engineer to support the development of high-performance haircare products from early concept through production.
This role is well-suited for an experienced engineer who applies engineering principles and sound judgment to solve complex, sometimes ambiguous problems. You will own key portions of larger programs, contribute to system-level decisions, and work closely with cross-functional partners to deliver robust, well-integrated solutions.
You bring a strong understanding of how your work fits into the broader product and organizational context, and you influence outcomes through collaboration, technical input, and mentorship of less experienced engineers.
What You'll Do
  • Contribute to the design and development of haircare appliances from concept through validation, manufacturing, and post-launch support
  • Own and deliver specific subsystems or performance areas (e.g., thermal delivery, airflow, structures, durability, noise, safety) within larger programs
  • Apply engineering principles to evaluate trade-offs related to performance, cost, reliability, and manufacturability
  • Collaborate with Electrical Engineering, Firmware, Industrial Design, Product Management, Operations, and external partners to deliver integrated solutions
  • Build and test prototypes to explore concepts, reduce risk, and inform design decisions
  • Plan and execute experiments, analyze results, and translate findings into practical design improvements
  • Support products through validation testing, compliance activities, and manufacturing scale-up
  • Identify areas for improvement in designs, processes, or ways of working
  • Influence and mentor junior engineers, co-ops, and interns through technical guidance and example

Required Skills & Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent
  • Typically 5+ years of progressive experience in consumer product design and development
  • Solid understanding of mechanical and thermal fundamentals and how system interactions affect performance
  • Experience designing components or subsystems involving motors, heaters, airflow paths, structures, or thermal control
  • Hands-on prototyping experience (e.g., 3D printing, machining, lab builds)
  • Experience planning and running tests and interpreting experimental data
  • Proficiency in Creo or SolidWorks
  • Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical partners
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on defined problem areas while collaborating effectively within a larger team
  • Strong sense of ownership with a proactive, problem-solving mindset

Preferred Experience
  • Experience with haircare appliances or similar handheld consumer products
  • Familiarity with small-appliance components such as motors, heaters, sensors, PCBAs, and safety devices
  • Exposure to compliance testing (UL/IEC), reliability testing, or mass production environments
  • Experience working in fast-paced development settings with evolving requirements

So it’s no surprise that the city consistently ranks among the greatest startup ecosystems in the world.

Key Facts About Boston Tech

  • Number of Tech Workers: 269,000; 9.4% of overall workforce (2024 CompTIA survey)
  • Major Tech Employers: Thermo Fisher Scientific, Toast, Klaviyo, HubSpot, DraftKings
  • Key Industries: Artificial intelligence, biotechnology, robotics, software, aerospace
  • Funding Landscape: $15.7 billion in venture capital funding in 2024 (Pitchbook)
  • Notable Investors: Summit Partners, Volition Capital, Bain Capital Ventures, MassVentures, Highland Capital Partners
  • Research Centers and Universities: MIT, Harvard University, Boston College, Tufts University, Boston University, Northeastern University, Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, National Bureau of Economic Research, Broad Institute, Lowell Center for Space Science & Technology, National Emerging Infectious Diseases Laboratories
