Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior / Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design, development, and optimization of advanced robotic and medical device technology.

The ideal candidate is a highly skilled, hands-on mechanical engineer with extensive experience in mechanism design, flexible devices and instruments, precision mechanical assemblies, and product development. This role requires someone who can independently evaluate existing designs, identify opportunities for improvement, and lead engineering initiatives with minimal oversight.

This is an opportunity to take ownership of complex engineering projects, lead a small technical team, and contribute to the development of innovative, next-generation technology.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead mechanical design, development, and redesign efforts for advanced robotic and electromechanical systems.

  • Evaluate existing mechanical designs to identify opportunities for simplification, improved performance, cost reduction, and manufacturability.

  • Design and develop complex mechanical mechanisms, flexible instruments, precision assemblies, and electromechanical components.

  • Apply engineering best practices to improve product reliability, functionality, and scalability.

  • Drive design optimization efforts to support the transition from functional prototypes to commercially viable products.

  • Provide technical leadership and direction to a small team of engineering technicians.

  • Independently manage engineering priorities, technical decisions, and project deliverables.

  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams, including mechanical, electrical, robotics, and product development engineers.

  • Coordinate engineering activities and delegate specialized design and development work to additional engineering resources as needed.

  • Support prototyping, testing, troubleshooting, design verification, and continuous product improvement.

  • Adapt to changing project requirements and contribute to additional engineering initiatives as needed.

Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.

  • Extensive hands-on experience in mechanical design, product development, and complex mechanism design.

  • Strong experience designing, developing, and improving mechanical assemblies and electromechanical systems.

  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate existing products and implement design improvements focused on functionality, cost, and manufacturability.

  • Experience leading engineering projects, providing technical direction, and managing engineering deliverables.

  • Strong CAD modeling and mechanical design capabilities.

  • Experience with prototyping, testing, troubleshooting, and iterative product development.

  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and thrive in a fast-paced engineering environment.

  • Strong communication, problem-solving, and cross-functional collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience designing flexible medical devices, flexible surgical instruments, endoscopes, or steerable catheters.

  • Knowledge of articulation mechanisms, cable-driven systems, flexible shafts, and miniature mechanical assemblies.

  • Background in medical devices, minimally invasive surgical instruments, or surgical robotics.

  • Experience with Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), and cost-reduction initiatives.

  • Experience integrating mechanical components with motors, actuators, sensors, and electrical systems.

  • Previous experience leading engineering technicians or multidisciplinary technical teams.

  • Experience supporting medical device development through verification, validation, or preparation for clinical use.

  • Background in engineering consulting, product development consulting, or customer-facing technical leadership.

What We Offer
  • Opportunity to work on innovative, cutting-edge robotic and medical device technologies.

  • Significant ownership of mechanical design and product development decisions.

  • Hands-on technical leadership responsibilities.

  • Challenging engineering projects focused on product innovation, design optimization, and commercialization.

  • Long-term engagement with opportunities to contribute to multiple engineering initiatives.
