We’re looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the Atlas Platform Mechanical Team, with a specific focus on designing the external structure including covers and padded shells. You will engineer the components the world will see and interact with as Atlas becomes a reality. Your designs will balance competing constraints including safety, durability, aesthetics, design for assembly and service, and scalability. These components will leverage a wide range of unique materials and manufacturing methods producing components with complex surfaces and geometry. You will work across the entire robot collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams to deliver hardware that directly impacts Atlas’s ability to interact with the world.
How you will make an impact:
Collaborate heavily within the broader platform ME team, ID team, suppliers, and with program leaders on requirements, design concepts, key design decisions, and issue resolution.
Develop new concepts and perform detailed analysis and testing on designs while considering constraints from multiple disciplines with a product-oriented focus
Create CAD models, drawings, specifications, assembly documentation, and test plans for parts and assemblies across the robot, with a specific focus on external shells and covers
Troubleshoot issues, determine root causes, document learnings, design and implement corrective and preventative solutions
Manage and work with outside vendors for components and assemblies that require outsourcing, high level of technical communication proficiency
Expertly manage several projects and designs concurrently while still meeting deadlines
Adapt quickly to changing project needs with a team first mindset
Desired Experience:
Any of the experience listed below would be applicable in this role, it is ideal but not required that candidates would possess all of these qualifications
B.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field, M.S. in Mechanical Engineering or related field is a plus
2+ years of experience designing components and systems within the fields of robotics, consumer or commercial products, industrial equipment or other relevant field
Strong intuition of engineering principles, ability to take on new things using this knowledge
Experience engineering production friendly designs, high performance systems, structural components, flexures, and compliant energy absorbing structures
Demonstrated ability to use CAD (Catia, NX, Solidworks, etc.) to model and analyze parts and assemblies with complex constrained geometry, willingness to learn new systems if required
Ability to design for various manufacturing methods, some experience with plastics, foam, rubber and other compliant materials
Able to scrutinize and optimize designs with hand calculations , FEA, CFD, etc
Experience building and testing your designs, knowledge of prototyping methods
Ability to produce detailed drawings using ASME standards including GD&T, (Y14.5-2018)
Have owned designs at various stages of development, from early prototypes to production
Soft skills: creative and team first thinking, excellent attention to detail, strong technical communication, a desire to take on new things, learn, and grow over time
A brief portfolio of images with short descriptions of recent work is required via either web-link or PDF.
We are interested in every qualified candidate who is eligible to work in the United States. However, we are not able to sponsor visas for this position.
The base pay range for this position is between $88,000 to $120,000 annually. Base pay will depend on multiple individualized factors including, but not limited to internal equity, job related knowledge, skills and experience. This range represents a good faith estimate of compensation at the time of posting.
