About the Role
Strategic, cross‑functional role that leads Mimecast’s revenue accounting and drives our transformation agenda.
Customer Finance Operations is looking for a Senior Manager, Revenue Accounting to own technical revenue recognition globally and lead the next phase of how the function operates. Reporting to the Senior Director, Customer Finance Operations and leading a small team, you'll be the authority on ASC 606 at Mimecast — partnering with Go-to-Market, the Commercial Desk, Legal, FP&A, Product, and IT Systems to turn new business models, pricing constructs, and non-standard terms into revenue treatments that are compliant, repeatable, and built to scale. This is a fast-moving global SaaS environment where technical rigor and pragmatism are both essential.
You’ll have the opportunity to drive automation and AI to the mechanical parts of revenue accounting. Mimecast has invested heavily in AI across the company. Finance is expected to do the same, and a meaningful share of that mandate sits in this role.
What You'll Do:
Technical Revenue Ownership
- Act as the global subject matter expert on ASC 606, providing authoritative interpretation, analysis and documented conclusions across all regions and product lines.
- Review non-standard, complex and strategic contracts — multi-element arrangements, channel and MSP/distribution structures, ramps, credits, and consumption or hybrid pricing constructs — and determine the appropriate accounting treatment.
- Own standalone selling price (SSP) analyses, customer benefit period assessments, and material right evaluations, including the underlying data, methodology and refresh cadence.
- Own and maintain the global revenue recognition policy, translating technical guidance into practical, usable direction for the business.
- Assess the revenue implications of new products, packaging, pricing models and routes to market before they launch.
Global Revenue Close, Controls and Audit
- Direct the monthly, quarterly and annual global revenue close, including reviews, controls and executive-ready flux and variance analysis.
- Own the internal control environment over revenue, ensuring controls are designed and evidenced to withstand external audit scrutiny.
- Serve as the primary liaison to the external auditors on all revenue matters, driving efficient, well-documented audit cycles.
- Drive process, policy and control consistency across regional revenue accounting teams, and communicate changes in application of policy clearly and proactively.
AI, Automation and Transformation
- Own the transformation roadmap for revenue accounting: identify, prioritize and deliver initiatives that reduce cycle time, eliminate manual effort and improve accuracy and auditability.
- Apply AI and agentic tooling to core revenue workflows — contract abstraction and review, SSP and pricing analysis, account reconciliations, flux commentary, audit and PBC preparation, and technical accounting research.
- Partner with the Accounting and Internal Audit teams to establish governance for AI use in accounting: documentation standards, model and prompt change control, auditability and evidence retention.
- Build AI fluency across the Customer Finance Operations team — defining what good looks like, what is safe, and what still requires professional judgment.
- Define and report the metrics that prove it worked: close-day reduction, manual journal entry and reconciliation volume, exception and rework rates, audit adjustments and control findings.
Systems and Data
- Serve as the revenue accounting SME for NetSuite and the Advanced Revenue Management (ARM) module — configuration, testing, release management and continuous optimization.
- Partner with Sales Operations and Deal Desk on Salesforce design so that quote-to-cash structures produce accurate, auditable revenue outcomes at the point of sale.
- Represent revenue accounting in order-to-cash architecture decisions, system implementations and data model changes, ensuring downstream accounting requirements are designed in from the start.
- Improve the quality and accessibility of revenue data, enabling self-service analytics rather than recurring manual reporting requests.
Business Partnering and Enablement
- Act as the trusted advisor to Sales Operations, Deal Desk, Commercial Finance, Legal, Service Delivery, and FP&A on significant deals and non-standard terms — shaping structure early rather than remediating late.
- Design and deliver global revenue recognition training within and beyond Finance.
- Create and present revenue analytics and executive-level reporting that informs decisions, not just reports history.
- Lead the order-to-cash workstream for M&A due diligence and post-close integration.
Leadership
- Lead, coach and develop a team of 1–2, setting a high bar for technical rigor, curiosity and ownership.
- Build a team culture where automation and AI are the default first question — “how can we use AI to perform this activity more efficiently or effectively?” — rather than an afterthought.
What You Bring:
Required
- CPA
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or related field.
- 8+ years of progressive revenue accounting experience, including at least 2 years leading and developing people.
- Deep, practical command of ASC 606 in a SaaS or subscription environment — not just theory, but the judgment calls and the documentation that stands up in audit.
- Public company or large private-equity-backed experience, with strong internal controls and SOX mindset.
- Hands-on experience with NetSuite and Salesforce.
- Demonstrated use of AI tools to improve accounting or finance workflows, paired with a clear-eyed understanding of where AI output requires human review, control and evidence.
- Advanced Excel, and the analytical instinct to interrogate data
- Exceptional communication skills — able to explain a complex technical conclusion to a sales leader, a CFO and an auditor, and be understood by all three.
- A genuine bias for improvement and resilience to lead change in a fast-moving, global environment.
- Strong ability to remain organized, adaptive, and comfortable managing multiple priorities with cross-functional stakeholders.
Preferred
- Big 4 or large public accounting foundation.
- Experience in cybersecurity, high-growth technology, or another complex SaaS business.
- Consumption-based, usage-based or hybrid pricing constructs.
- Multi-entity, multi-currency global close experience.
- Working knowledge of SQL, Snowflake, Power BI or Tableau.
- M&A diligence and integration exposure.
